I remember listening to that game on the radio in my dad's car as a 6 year old.

And I also remember the nationally televised game the next year when LSU won 28-8.

Incredible memories for a young Tiger fan!

That's how I remember the turf that day. I think there was more dirt than grass. I thought at the time, that was as poor a field as i had ever seen.

Joe T said after that best pass he threw all day was right into TC chest and "Tommy just dropped the ball" . Also, Ara said was his favorite W since was mostly Defensive game.
Listen to game on WWL with my dad as a 9th grader we were painting and totally bummed since we played them so even to lose on a bad interference call I think that set up their FG.

Chicago Tribune wrote it was the greatest defensive battle in South Bend history.

I was there. Massive defensive game. ND's field goal came on 4th and goal from outside the 15, after starting 1st and goal inside the 5. It was my 23rd birthday.

Gatewood was drafted by the NY Giants in the 1972 NFL draft. He played in 17 games over two seasons, recording no receptions. Apparently quite the bust.

I had the elves restore and colorize another faded B&W. This is Cholly Mac and a few of the players exiting the buses near the locker room. I'm sorry to say I don't recognize any of the players.

I see Rudy. South Endzone, 14th row up, behind the goalpost, sitting next to some ugly chick

That was a great football game. It is a shame that Butch Duhe died at the start of the season; I believe that we would have won the game with him. We had the best team in the country in 1969, and Texas wormed their way out of the game by playing Notre Dame. Had Duhe survived Jones might have red shirted ( I know he might have left) and played the 1973 season. We might have won a national championship then as well.

I remember that play very well. I was 12 years old. Believe it or not, that game was not on television. Very few were back then. I was listening to the game on the radio at the house of my good friend who was Tommy Casanova’s cousin. We were heartbroken.

I think you membering is slipping. ND 3 - LSU 0

We had a 3 - 3 tie with Ohio St back in the day, that you might be remembering.

I was at the 28-8 win in 1971 at Tiger Stadium. I’m pretty sure Casanova had an interception in the end zone in that game. Andy Hamilton had a big game.

Thank you so much for posting. What a great memory. I was a young lad but I still remember that game and what a great game it was. And Tommy Casanova was definitely one of my favorite players as a young lad and my late Uncle Vernon loved him some. Tommy Casanova just curious, does anyone know who that is lineman or linebacker that's hitting Joe theisman as he's throwing the ball. If anyone had that information, just curious. Thanks and again thanks for sharing buddy
