Casanova had a great game the next year, also, in Tiger Stadium. 28-8 and the goal posts came down right in front of us in the student section (i was home from med school to see the game).

Wow dude that is fantastic. Great job keeping this looking this good all this time and thanks for sharing.

I remember this game. It was a monumental defensive struggle and yes, I do recall that Cassanova had a full field in front of him if he'd made the pick and returned it 100 yards.
As noted above, LSU did avenge that loss the next season at Tiger Stadium as the Irish lost decisively.

USC/ UCLA was showed on Channel 13 (ABC) in that same time slot that day. I suppose at the time it was scheduled it seemed more attractive, but I don't know why. LSU was 9-1 the previous season and oh so close to playing Texas for the title and Notre Dame was
8-1-1 and did compete in that game, losing 17-21. Also Joe Theismann was widely peg as a Heisman Trophy candidate in 1970. It seems as if his underwhelming showing against LSU and Notre Dame's loss to USC the next week eliminated Theismann from trophy consideration.

Was at the gym armory too. What an experience for myself and a couple of high school friends.

I stand corrected 3-0 ND
Indeed the refs did steal that game!
I was a student sophomore at LSU and in Death Valley for the 28-8 beat down.
BTW was in our student cafeteria for lunch when the ND football team came in ; we all stood up and booed them out the cafeteria !
Yeah I'm an old fart but forever a LSU TIGER.

LSU‘s defense prevented Joe Theisman from winning the Heisman that year. Even though Theisman changed his pronunciation to rhyme with Heisman.

I know the colorization is an AI thing, but can someone confirm that ND wore green jerseys that day?
My understanding, from my ND grad brother, is that ND always wore blue jerseys in the Ara Parseghian tenure, and only started wearing green jerseys when Dan Devine brought them out for a Joe Montana era game against Southern Cal.
I've always thought the Devine green jerseys were the Irish's best look. I'm just curious as whether ND wore them in this game.
GEAUX TIGERS!

I was there. It was an awesome trip sponsored by American Bank. Too many stories to tell. I have a copy of the front page around here somewhere, but the headlines in the sports page in the Chicago Tribune Sunday morning said “If Notre Dame is #1, LSU is 1A”. Awesome game and awesome trip.

Your understanding is absolutely spot on. Notre Dame wore their traditional navy blue jerseys against LSU in the 1970 game.

All I remember about that game was Joe Theismann pounding on the ground with the football when he made that critical first down. Put ND in range for a field goal - they made it and won 3-0.
LSU lost but let it be known - the LSU Tigahs was a team to contend with in the run for a NC.
Let's hope Lane Kiffin and the Tigahs bring back the magic in Death Valley.
Let the count down clock begin.

That's pretty natural color for that game

I was at the game as well. A day or so before the game the Chicago newspaper said of the game that it was an unstoppable force versus an unmovable object. It was a slugfest through 3+ quarters until the refs called pass interference on LSU twice which gave ND an opportunity to kick a field goal and win 3-0.
I have no memory of the Casanova incident…snd it wasn’t mentioned by anyone who was also at the game or in any newspaper articles since then. More than likely it was a pass no defensive back could have made.

This pic proves that Tommy Casanova dropped that ball though it hit him right in the numbers and he is to blame for the Loss.

I was 17 and remember listening to John Ferguson call the game.

I was in the northwest part of the stadium, above the goalline. I seem to remember most of the scoring and goalline stands-- really most of the action taking place at the opposite end of the field.
Tiger Stadium was LIT that night. I think the decibel level was greater than for the famous Earthquake Game. Also for the Ole Miss game the following year. I know the stadium was smaller back then, but the noise seemed more intense.
LSU rubbed it in late-- scoring a "style points" TD with less than 30 seconds. But the crowd loved it!

Not at all - Casanova played a great game, and he was very much the reason the game was 0-0 into the fourth quarter.

I have the coach’s film from that game. I called Notre Dame and they gave me the film and the radio broadcast on a cd and a dvd for 90 dollars. It was a retirement gift for my dad. He was number 93 and played defensive end who sacked Theisman twice in that game, once for 5 yards and a second time for 18 yards.
It’s in black and white, and.its cut one play after the other.
