You don't, but you also don't want to roll out guys that aren't ready either. Also, if you pick up guys in the portal who have several years left, you are basically doing the same thing as picking up a HS kid.

Going 8-4 changes your perspective. Either way, we had the fewest transfers of any SEC team last year (tied with Tenn at 9). Aggie had 28 and Ole Miss 26. Bama had 15, UGA 11, Texas 12.

Either work the portal or the portal works you.

While I agree with that statement, we can't into next year without some portal help and expect it to go any different than last year. I think they still want to build through HS, but at a reasonable cost. We missed badly on the 2023 class, so we have some making up to do.

When you look back on any class 2-3 years later it's going to look like you missed badly, because a large number of those players will be gone. It's just the landscape of CFB right now. You sign the best class possible, try to hold on to as many as you can, and then go heavily into the portal.

We need OTs more than a center

We actually have some young talent at Tackle with Davis and Adams and some others behind them. Hell, even our new signee at OT tore it up in the MS-AL All-Star Game practices and drew rave reviews.

Outside of Curne, who will be a true freshman, and Echols, a redshirt freshman who we knew wasn’t coming in and taking the Center job immediately, we don’t have as much depth and raw talent inside. I think Chester may be a more natural Guard, but we can’t bank on him just stepping and being good there. And just because Mubenga showed a little progression doesn’t mean he’s instantly an SEC starter now. He still has a ways to go.

That said, I would like to see us get one OT with experience from the portal to create competition in that group. No one should be handed a job. All of these guys need to fight like hell to earn a spot, and maybe they will bring some edge to next year’s OL that this year’s sorely lacked.

Ole Miss didn’t have the young talent that we currently do from the 24 and 25 classes. They HAD to rely on the portal because they haven’t recruited the talent or numbers from HS to survive and replenish their roster and stay at close to their current level. We will likely start at least one or two portal players on the OL and DL, but both of those positions will also have several developed HS players, as well. Whoever we bring in at TE will have to battle with Green for PT. Same for CB. Same for WR. Our new QB knows he likely won’t have shot to start until next season.

Other than maybe TE and Safety, we aren’t buying the majority of PT for a position room from the portal. That’s a big difference. The portal guys we are bringing in aren’t all walking into starting roles. Most will still have to fight former 4 and 5 star players to win jobs. Several of them will win those battles, but a few may not and will end up playing off the bench.

Going forward, the good news is that we held onto all of the major young contributors on the roster. Womack left, but he wasn’t even playing down the stretch for being in the doghouse. As long as we consistently keep our top young players, you probably won’t see as many double digit portal classes going forward. That would be ideal, because it reduces the risk of issues with the mercenary attitude that some programs have run into. We even had problems with that ourselves on our defense in 23 with Harris and Chestnut.

Another good thing about only needing a few portal players per season is that we can then spend toe to toe with anyone to chase a few top players at positions of need instead of spreading the budget around so much.

Totally agree, I love Davis’s potential as a lockdown OT. Let the guys you recruited and developed cook if they show promise. On Brad Davis to decide if the developing talent > transfer talent.

Side note: I know Adams came in a G at times this season. Wonder if they would bump him inside and have a transfer OT and Davis on the outside?

I think we need interior lineman more than tackles.

On the one hand, yes, it's true that you don't want one-year rent-a-players to form the basis of your *program*, but having a large number for one year here and there isn't the same as what Ole Miss has been doing in the portal era. At some point, they will have a cycle where they miss on more than their fair share of portal signees, and it will look like 2024 FSU.

On the other hand, it's also true that the people on this board talking about how its bad to have a team full of mercenaries were primarily just trying to make themselves feel better about the fact that Ole Miss had a better roster than we did/hit the portal much more effectively than we did last year

How are we not the Leader if we are only going up against Nebraska, plus he would get 1st dibs at LT to start.

Going into 2025 we will have holes that need to be filled. We brought in 23 recruits and likely will get to 25 according to Kelly. We have solid recruits from 2023 and 2024 that are developing and will play in rotations. We have a 5th year senior QB who is projected as the # 5 QB in this years draft. We needed players with experience to fill gaps and depth and bring it all together this year while we have the QB. If Kelly remains true to his philosophy, these players will fit the program approach he’s laid out and hopefully blend with the team. We will have experience and depth for 2025, and in 2026 most of the experience and depth will have been here 2-3 years with game experience.

Bottom line--we have talent but no experience at tackle, both right and left, and it's a big risk to go into a season where you intend on ending it with a natal title with 2 unexperienced tackkes.

FF On3

Maybe because it’s the only school he’s visited, maybe a decision has been made, but On3 is showing him 100% Nebraska. Sucks.
