re: Was Glen Dorsey the last 5-star DT that lived up to the recruiting hype at LSU?

Dorsey was a 4 star and didn’t get a lot of love from the services. Tyson Jackson was a 3 star that year. Marlon Favorite was the big 5 star DT that year. Dorsey played some his freshman year over favorite which did surprise some people at the time.

Freak Johnson and Mason Smith were NFL money chasers. I can’t remember the last one that really worked out that great for us.

Big Al Woods was in the league for like 15 years.

Michael Brockers was a stud.

He recovered a fumble in his first ever game against oregon state in the slop
Classic Jamarcus game

Devon Godchaux was awesome.
I know a lot of people like to make fun of message boards, but if the majority of the posters on this board speak highly of a kid no matter the stars, he's a stud. And there's usually a kid every couple of years

Not sure about star rating, but I remember Marcus Spears was a huge recruit in 2001. I remember thinking things have changed for LSU when they got him. I expected him to go to Florida, Tennessee or Miami or the usual culprits.

What about Travonte Valentine? I dont remember his star rating but it was a saga with him not being eligible and then finally coming back. Guy would flash for a play or two but was too huge to play any meaningful snaps.

TE and basketball player, turned beast DE.
ETA:
That class is why I follow recruiting -
Michael Clayton
Marcus Spears
Marquise Hill (big get out of Nola we didn't do well in)
Ben Wilkerson
Andrew Whitworth
Joseph Addai
All absolute studs in college.
And guys like Niswanger and a bunch of higher rated guys that were good in college.

Wasn’t Tyler Shelvin a high 4-Star, and at times 5-star throughout his recruiting process?

Surprised no one mentioned the goat:
Trindon Holliday!
Trindon Holliday!

I wonder what Booger would have been rated?

There has been a string of above average LA DL talent that's been billed as the next Dorsey. Just to name a few (not all have been as highly ranked or touted).
Freak Johnson - Great athlete for his size, not a great football player. Bounced around the league for 5 years.
Godchaux - Probably the best (At LSU) since Dorsey, behind Brockers. Still in the league after 9 years.
Shelvin - Was really good in spurts. Numbers weren't great but he disrupted the interior run game really well.
Lawrence - Was more of a 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT tweener. Was good, not great at LSU. Looks to be out of the league after 4 years.
Glen Logan - Was very servicable while at LSU. Had a cup of coffee in the league.
Ed Alexander - could have been great but had injury issues. Watched him absolutely dominate in high school.
Roy - Pretty good player at LSU. Still in the league but injured.
Guillory - solid rotational piece on the LSU DL. Likely not much of a future in the pros as he's an undersized nose.
Maason Smith - Got a bad rap here. Tons of talent but was either injured or being coached by mongoloids. I think he'll have a good NFL career.
McKinley - Jury is still out. Shows flashes but will disappear.
I'm hoping Brown/Anderson can really break through and be stars. It's been so, so long since we've had an interior DL be a gamebreaker.

Hard to accomplish when we have had a new DL coach every year for the last 7 or 8 years and will have another new coach next year if rumors on Williams are true. We need a coach that will be here for a few years to recruit and develop their guys.
