Vol, can you shed a little light on why we passed on Donell Harris?

I get that we have been actively reeling in Ojulari and Webb as our top options as outside pass rushers, but all indications are that he wanted to commit, and we flat out turned him down.

Any truth to this? And if so, why?

247 has Harris predicted as a future first round NFL draft selection in the mold of Aldon Smith. Just doesn’t seem like the level of talent that LSU would have passed on under normal circumstances.

From what I gather, he’s a project and Webb/BJ were preferred

Dozens of kids with elite talent want to commit to LSU. We are now in a position to cherry pick the best of the best. Don’t question the coaches, trust in what they are building ... a team that will compete for National Championships

We were taking 2 of the 3 out of him, Webb, and BJ. He was third on the list. Look at the level of player we’ve been processing and tell me how you justify taking 3 guys who fill the same role on defense.

And if you go by that same 247 model Webb is ranked 12 spots higher than him and is 100% crystal balled to LSU and we technically only have one spot do the math...

I just suspect that there were other things going on with him that we don’t have knowledge of that caused the coaches to say no.

Whether it was grades, a poor attitude, or drug problems, I don’t know. Just my thoughts.

Dude, you’re over-thinking it. This isn’t rocket science. Your “assumptions” on the kids character are pretty disrespectful without knowing the facts. The coaches feel more confident in signing the 2 higher rated players.

I just love that you ask a particular person, and everybody felt obligated to answer

Coaches view players differently than scouts for recruiting sites. Coaches may value different things. Some things are more important to coaches that scouts can't see.

A former assistant told me the services to a good job of identifying the elite guys, that's fairly easy, but do an awful job on the rest. Basically their process of placing a kid at #75 vs #200 isn't based on anything college staffs can figure out.

He also said assistants feed the mods of the sites with false info to boost/slide rankings.

it's true. over about the last 4 years or so, Sean Payton has only tried to draft ( at least in the high rounds), players that come from a 2 parent home. He's been public about it. He said the players are just mentally better off. So to your point, he views players differently than mel kiper.

Harris has a lot of potential but looks a couple a couple years away from contributing but Webb and Ojulari look much more college ready.

Agree. I think Webb is a 5*, and BJO is a top 100 kid with great bloodlines and work ethic, who faces top competition.

Harris "might" have higher longterm potential than Ojulari, but is rawer, despite what his stats show.

IMO Patrick Surtain is why.

BJ wanted in and O’s not getting left at the alter again.

BJ and Webb can play next year. Harris will have to redshirt. He reclassified and needs to add some weight

Also, once Arik came on board BJ jumped Donell bc they are teammates and solidified Arik in this class. Webb was always the highest on the list and always had a spot and we were just talking 2 of the 3.

Watch his film. He's not getting on an sec field for at least 2 years and might never develop.

The other guys can impact next year
