The transfer portal will make recruiting obsolete.

So far everything has gone the player's way (which is fine). NIL, transfer portal, no penalty season.
However, as with everything in life, the negatives start to appear when things go too far. One thing I foresee happening is the transfer portal and the current transfer rules (if they stand), will make recruiting and all the hoopla that surround it obsolete.
Yes - there will always be the need for basic recruiting needed to be done by coaches but now schools will recruit athletes more based on NIL and ability to make $$.
Secondly - if I'm a coach, I'm not going to go grovel in an 18 yr old's living room any more, especially if there's a chance he bolts in a year anyway. And if he does, no big deal. . . i can just go the transfer portal and have my pick of as many free agents I want. Kids can kiss those ridiculous "commitment ceremonies" goodbye. . they will be meaningless.
Tell me why I'm wrong.

I agree with you in general but won't coaches still have to grovel for kids in the transfer portal? I don't see playing to these kids egos going away any time soon. If anything NIL would inflate that not suppress it.

You’re not. It’s the truth.

Well... The flip side of that (and you are right) is that these dudes are sooner or later gonna have to earn the transfer. "I was a 5* three years ago!" ain't gonna earn you shite at the next stop if you didn't do shite for your first $hundred-fiddy large. It will be interesting...

The portal will change recruiting, but not eliminate it. There will continue to be a huge premium on QBs in recruiting as the college game becomes more like the NFL. Alabama has had three straight Heisman caliber QBs. Mac Jones didn’t win it, but will arguably be the best NFL QB.
Talent evaluation is at a premium now for portal players. Much NFL talent is developed after high school (late bloomers) and the ability to identify that talent in the portal will be critical. One issue we’re seeing this year is tampering, in other words, recruiting players from other teams to enter the portal. That’s the biggest issue with the portal. If the tampering can be controlled, then recruiting the right players combined with good coaching, superior talent evaluation, and player develop will be most important going forward.

Things change. Rules will be updated. Coaches will adapt.
Acting like today is the constant going forward is incorrect.

Lots of high end kids transferring from Alabama?
Can we just go pluck a first rounder from them?
Oh yeah, kids making money and running up stats don’t transfer.

Yeah I mean Bama and Texas A&M can just sit back now and let everybody else take the risk on some players , and if they pan out get in their ear offer them money. Then they can just leave without reason to the transfer portal.Seems like a great idea.Whoever is running the NCAA should be kicked in the nuts for being a dumbass. Now you can recruit, then if players don’t pan out you tell them there is no place for them, then just steal players from your rivals to fill holes.Lovely

You’re wrong because most of the kids who transfer are not good

Coaches still have to establish relationships with players and their families. When a good player who didn’t win the starting position in spring camp, like Joe Burrow, goes looking for a new spot, it will help any coach that spent the time in that kid’s living room.

It won’t ever become obsolete. You can’t rely on the portal every year because you have limited information and time to build relationships with those guys. Most high school recruits have gotten to know coaches for 2-3 years. You still have to build your team with high school guys like the NFL does with the draft. The portal is the free agency component.

You still have to play football

If LSU doesn't have NIL deals. I guess 8 wins is very good season.

There are a few people who will bolt to higher ground while a team sinks but most are going down hill.

AL just cherry picks the best from the portal like All Americans from their competition.

Won't make it obsolete, but it does minimize it some

Maybe in the past but now the good players will enter the portal
Making players sit out one year will make that go away
