Has free agency made the NFL draft obsolete?

The portal adds and extra layer of intrigue and excitement. We’ll get our share of talent from it and it’ll become part of the recruiting landscape

Rule change proposal: school receiving the portal players pays the scholarship back to original school player signed with.

Could there even be a portal combine so players can be evaluated?

Can’t wait for televised portal signings with hats on the tables so we can respect their decisions some more.

The transfer portal will change, good players will also be entering the transfer portal for larger NIL contracts.

Occasionally bonafide elite players will hit the portal. Most times though they're going to be like Amazon returns, they're defective in some way, don't fit, broken, not as advertised. Most of the transfer portal players have some kind of major deficiency, otherwise they'd be balling out for their own team.

It's bargain bin hunting for CFB. Can you build a great team off of the TP? No. Can you potentially find one great fit, a great bargain? Absolutely.

This is why you are wrong.

NIL deals are contracts.
How about these terms on a 1mil deal:
-Exclusive rights to players NIL for 4 years

-1mil paid up front, earned in 4 250k/yr installments

-Player must be available at studio at a specific location and times (in say some college town somewhere), to earn the installments. At the end of 4 years any unearned installments must be paid back.

Now if the player wants to transfer after just one year he owes 750k back 3 years later and his NIL rights are still held so he cannot sign another contract.

no groveling will be necessary. Just who makes the biggest arse offer. I wouldn't be surprised if one day the players are paraded around like horses at an auction. They simply agree to go to the highest bidder.

Tell me why I'm wrong.
Not saying you are but I'd like to make a point that doesn't get mentioned much.
They can only transfer once.
Not like they can switch after each season. Cash to sign somewhere then only once to move on to another school, grab the bag, and not have to sit out..
I'm not sure if they could do it again as Grad Students. I'm guessing somebody can get us up to speed on that.

According to The Spun in S.I., 911 FBS scholarship players have entered the transfer portal since 8/11/21. Of that number, 27% (243) have found new teams. 3.5% withdrew their name (32), and 69.8% (636) are sitting by the phone, having given up their scholarships.

It won’t become obsolete, but it will become an integral part of it.
