Givens had a rough year. I do think he can develop in a different type of system with better players around him
Basically how I felt about our entire corp of freshmen

I do understand the times have changed, but the rhetoric from Mcmen about the freshmen's lack of talent was wild. there was a lot of promise from those four with proper development.

There was indeed a lot of promise with those four. However promise doesn’t mean instant impact. You can’t rely on four freshman, three of them not even top 50, to make a “tournament team” impact in year one. Unless those are one and done type freshman it just won’t work out.

It's a bummer that group hit the road so quick. Adding Thomas Jr to V. Miller, Chest, Givens, Reed, & R. Miller would have been a very solid team. Get some support from the incoming FR and another random transfer or two and that's probably a tournament team. It's also probably a roaster that was beyond Lsu's NIL budget.

Oh, so McMen think this year’s team had great talent? I can’t keep up with the moving goalposts

Freshmen talent. You can’t win in the SEC depending on freshmen unless they are mostly Cooper Flagg types. I think all of them develop into good players . How good remains to be seen. But between the 4 freshmen and a jr that had hardly played his last 2 years reed and ward would have been very valuable .

Taking talent and developing them is probably the key for LSU. We just haven't had the $$$ to keep some of the talent, or to surround a program with vets in the portal to make a winning program.
We seem to have that commitment now, but it would have been helpful the last couple of years. Especially if we could have secured Cenac.
2 years ago we had Reed, Ward, and Hannibal improve while getting Mike Williams to develop (well above his ranking) and bringing in Wright and Baker to fill in the gaps.
This past year we had freshmen who needed to develop, Mike Williams sorta wigged out early (credit for being positive all season), Reed was hurt and Ward noped out. The 3 senior guards were brought in didn't work out as a group.
The freshmen were very talented but VJ was the only one ready to contribute early. Robert Miller contributed late.

Mike Williams’s attitude last season is so overlooked. Kept his head up and kept the program first despite his role decreasing and not having the greatest year. Hope he finds himself a good situation. Haven’t heard or seen too much on him.

quote:Completely agree. I know McMahon doesn't want to rerecruit players who enter the portal, but i would make an exception for MW3. He kept a positive face on all season. Heck, we could even offer his number 3 back.

Were those the rankings going into the season for the past teams or rankings following the season?
If it’s the latter, then your argument about this being a 70-110 roster is missing the development factor

That is a viable criticism of Mcmahon last season not playing Williams earlier. I think he was trying to let his freshman PG develop as Williams was a 2 not a PG but Givens wasn't physically ready for the SEC. I admired Williams for keeping his head up and stepping in when he was called upon instead of moping and being unprepared. Ithink if Ward had that same mentality he could have resumed his position as a starter but I wasn't at the early practices so I can't comment on what was the deciding factor to play Bailey but there is no doubt in my mind that Ward would have had starter minutes and been in the games late just for his offense. If he can't handle a little adversity he won't be successful anywhere.

Those were end of season rankings. So, EOS 23-24 vs. EOS 24-25 vs. EOS 24-25 for new players. Yes, it is missing the development factor, but that number for the new roster doesn't include the incoming FR, and FR typically have pretty low EOS BPRs. Young players typically show the most improvement in BPR; for example, Reed went from -0.22 to 2.65. Experienced players tend to be more stable - Carter went up slightly, but Sears, Bailey, & Fountain went down.
Avg BPR isn't great, but it's better than vibes for looking at the new roster. The good news is that CMM appears to still be working the Portal hard to add another player or two, which could certainly change things.

Harper is weighing out engineering programs and graduation rates I’m sure.

I’ve heard a return to Howard is 100% on the table
