Say whatever you want about developing players etc… it comes down to signing the best players in the country and we are not doing that. That’s the formula for winning and it’s been proven repeatedly.

We are at the point now where we are supposed to be excited about signing a bunch of 3 star players? That is not LSU recruiting. Downvote away but that’s the truth.

Maybe we can sign some more good players, difference makers, regardless of how many stars.

You mean like :
K Coleman 89.00 3* #43 WR Natl
J Wilson 86.75 3* #108 WR Nationally

I'll put these two posts I already made here as well since people seem to keep repeating this narrative of just getting 3 stars and how terrible our recruiting is:

quote:

quote:
when did Bk have a full recruiting class that finished in this range

He hasn't yet. BK was hired in November of 2021. If you count 2022 as a "full year" we were #12 in HS recruits and #7 overall. 2023 #6 HS recruits and #5 overall. Currently #9 HS recruits and overall.

We need to do better, much better at certain skill positions, but this narrative of all we get with Kelly is non top 10 classes and 3*s is completely fabricated by some on here who are either overreacting to Sunday or just don't like Kelly and never will. I remember seeing similar stuff posted all over here right after the fsu game last year, and we had a top 5 class and won the west.

quote:

Seriously, where is this made up narrative of a "roster full of 3 stars" coming from?

Since everyone is comparing us to UGA or Bama here are the numbers from last year and this year, per 247.

2023:
Bama:9 5*, 20 4*, and 4 3* #1 class
UGA: 5 5*, 20 4*, and 5 3* #2 class
LSU: 3 5*, 24 4*, and 13 3* #5 class

2024 (currently):
Bama: 2 5*, 11 4*, and 6 3* #4 class
UGA: 4 5*, 17 4*, and 5 3* #1 class
Lsu: 0 5*, 16 4*, and 7 3* #9 class

We took so many three stars last year because we desperately need bodies. Did you not see how gassed our top talent was by q4 of the game on Sunday? Kelly took over a depleted roster and he has to fill it quickly. Would it be great to get all 4* backups, sure but that really isn't an option yet.

We obviously have skill positions that need to be filled with better higher end talent and we do need to improve this class' high end talent before it's all said and done, but people on here acting like our entire roster is now 3*s and that's all lsu can get is just absurd.

Look at the 5* and 4* numbers. Lsu isn't light years behind in getting them when compared to UGA or Bama. We're just light years behind in experience and depth because of the mess of a roster we had when O left. I've said this before but we have not seen a full high school recruiting cycle from Kelly play on the field yet. These things take time to fix and if we do well again this season recruiting gets a little easier. If we play every game like fsu then I will be very worried with the program's direction as a whole.

Nice post. You did a good job of explaining the situation BUT the fact remains our recruiting is trending in the wrong direction.

Explain how having a number 5 class in his first full year of recruiting and winning the west on the field is going in the wrong direction? Would you rather a top 3 class where most of the talent either flames out or transfers out in a year or two, like O got?

If you want to discuss lsu's talent going downhill at any point look to the day after we on our last NC and O checked out. Most of our 5* recruits flamed out or transferred out and Kelly inherited a team with less than 40 scholarship athletes. Did you think that was going to be fixed with one recruiting cycle under his belt? Like I said I know we need better talent in certain skill positions and that has to get fixed, but everyone freaking out right now isn't because something has changed. It's because you either don't like Kelly, your panicking after Sundays game, or have unrealistic ideas of where we were when he took over vs now.

Eta: I'm not saying Kelly is perfect but my point is we would need to see, at a minimum, this season play out before you start saying Kelly can't cut it here.

The 2022 class was #6 overall. 2023 was #5 overall. 2024 isn't done yet.

So higher ranked classes is "trending in the wrong direction"?

Bro, do you even follow LSU recruiting? Recruiting has BEEN trending in the wrong direction for years. From the 2020 class, who should be redshirt juniors and seniors this year, only Guillory, Martinez and Bradford are still on the team. From the 2021 class, only like 8 guys are actually contributing right now, and that's including Nuss.

Both of those classes were ranked 4th and were total disasters. These two classes should be providing the core talent and leadership for this year's team and only account for about 9 players that even contribute right now, and maybe 1 or 2 studs (depending on how you feel about Smith and Nabers).

The 2018 and 2019 classes turned turned out to be pretty terrible as well.

I think most people’s issue between those three teams listed is that both have 5 stars (4 and 2) while LSU has 0.

Stars are not the most important thing, but they do represent potential in many cases. Losing currently the only in state 5 star to A&M and Kelly claiming about fit seems like excuse making to some.

He’s down an average job of recruiting by LSU standing. He’s relying way too much on the portal and underperforming with his recruits. Because of that, he is staying in this cycle of having to rely on the portal. That is not going to cut it. Portal should be to help depth and not fill major gaps in your program.

He’s not nearly doing as badly as some say, but he is underwhelming at this point.

For LSU standards he’s not doing a great job. But I also think NIL is kicking our arse and that’s the scarier situation. If this just keeps going with no limits then the Golden Age of LSU is over

I didn’t see any development last week did you? We can’t “develope” 4 and 5 star . Does Sage Ryan look developed? How about Daniels?

I agree with most of your post, but I am not sure I would say he is underwhelming. Looking at the 5* numbers for last year's class since this one is not yet finished Bama had freaking 9 which is unreal. But UGA had two more than us. Not a bad job considering the circumstances Kelly was given when he took over. With that said I 100% agree the elite talent is lacking in this class and we have to fix that. I am just saving my judgement of this class until it's all said and done.

Regarding all the portal is or isn't sustainable talk, at the end of the day if we win on the field that's the most important thing. We ended up pretty good in that aspect last year, even after losing to FSU. It just seems the state of LSU football, according to some on here, has taken a massive nose dive based on a bad loss to a good team. Season is just starting lots of things, good or bad, can change before the end of the year.

Travis is throwing to these guys not Daniels. That’s why they look so good.

5 stars have like a 60% NFL draft rate. 3 stars 5%. Guys on here will defend awful recruiting yet be mad about losses

You hit the nail on the head. Swap a few 3 stars for 5 stars and that’s where other top programs are killing us in recruiting. I’ll take more 5* over 3* every year. I know depth and development is huge, but there’s a reason those programs are also winning or playing championships consistently and we aren’t.

God you people are freakn dumb arse nails! Y’all wouldn’t know what it takes to build a program if it was scripted for you. We are fine, even if CBK doesn’t work out, LSU will be fine. These things will iron themselves out in time, why can’t our fans just sit back and enjoy the ride?

We haven’t played enough football this season to know what we have or don’t have. To know what direction we headed in or out of. This team could improve quite a bit in the next 3-4 games and all of a sudden we back on track.

We start swinging for the fences on big recruits and start landing some. Could flip some. We just don’t know diddly squat yet. We still have another QB if the current guy doesn’t have what it takes. Why didn’t he do certain things in this last game? Idk? I know they practiced it a ton this off-season though.

He didn’t do what he was taught to do. He didn’t get rid of the ball, he didn’t hand it off, he didn’t go through progressions and he didn’t throw the ball deep or over the middle. I know this, if he gets it right, starts trusting his WRs, this team is much better than what was shown Sunday.

We also had some very bright spots on Defense and offense. ST’s wasn’t good because of the fumble and other than that, they just did their job. Nothing great to help us, besides doing their job. We had a decent pass rush, they just didn’t play as a team. It was a lot of individual plays. We have to play as a team and let the ball come to them and then make a play. The LB have to be used more aggressively and we have to find the right guys for outside and inside corner positions. Chestnut is not an outside corner. He’s a safety and should play inside at nickel. They will have to let others try outside and see how they perform in the games. I think we good on the inside. It’s 1 outside spot and over the top at safety that needs to improve.
