Comparing Ken Adams to DJ Welter is laughable considering the caliber of defenses each started on and the other options available at defensive end and Mike backer.

the same argument could be used for players out of high school....what percentage of the 25 per year pan out? and then what percentage of juco guys pan out?

i'd be willing to bet the percentage is very close on players who actually start and contribute

To be honest I don't get excited over them either because they are such an unknown. Most have had character or academic problems. But if the talent crop is down and we can't address our d-line issues in state or through snagging some 5-stars out of state. I then think it could be beneficial to get a guy that can come play right away to develop our younger guys that one more year.

How many JUCO players really work out or even play at LSU?

D Byrd is the only one that I remember truly contributing.

Was Marlon Favorite JUCO?

Leslie...has even seen the field?

sorry. I just don't get excited over JUCO offers anymore

Maybe not LSU but i guarantee AU is damn proud of D. Williams this year

shite Randy Gregory for Nebraska was a JUCO. After his first year at Nebraska last year, they were talking top 10 pick in 2015 NFL draft. He has 4.5 sacks in only 5 games this year plus an int and FF.

Finished his first year with 65 tackles (39 solo) 16.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, an int TD and a FF.

Kevin White (WVU) was a JUCO player as well.

I think this is a real good offer because right now the roster is devoid of big, run-stuffing DEs (With the exception, maybe, being Lewis Neal. I'm not sure where he's going to play in the future, but his stint at DT could be very beneficial for him in the run game if/when he goes back to DE). Now, don't misread me, there are some very good DEs on the roster, but all of them besides Neal are under 250 pounds.

Stopping the run is the weakness of the Defense right now. Although the main issues are at DT, a big DE like Lewis can help get some push and add some size and strength to the D-line. Also, big DEs can be rotated in for specific matchups based on down and distance and offensive personnel, plus it helps keep your pass rushers fresh.

That's why I think Herron should move back outside. He can be the starting DE with Teuhema coming in on obvious passing downs, or replacing one of the LBs as a stand up DE.

Yeah, that's the type of rotation I'm talking about. Back in 2010, I thought the D-line would benefit from a rotation like that with Lazarius Levingston and Barkevious Mingo. Of course, that would have been contingent on having another player at DT while Levingston was at DE.

However, I usually don't favor exclusive rotational splits, where some guys only play on expected run downs and other guys are only pass rushers, but sometimes it can work out that way. It just depends on player development and situation, but I do favor some form of rotation if possible.

Mingo eventually developed into a player that was stout against the run and a great pass rusher, but in 2010 he was a RS freshman, still a thin guy that could be overpowered at times in the running game. Pep was a 280-pound 5th-year senior. A little light at DT, but would've made a nice jumbo DE on early downs and short-yardage and goal-line situations, with a fresh Mingo subbing in to rush the passer.

Kirston Pittman played a pass-rushing role like that early on before he developed into an every-down DE.

There have been a lot of big DEs at LSU that were also good pass rushers -- Lavar Edwards, Tyson Jackson, Melvin Oliver, Marcus Spears, Marquise Hill, Jarvis Green, etc. And then, plenty of guys like Mingo, that weren't necessarily big DEs, but played strong against the run. It seems that Chavis tends to favor a lighter, faster player at the position, but with the Run Defense currently giving up 4.5 YPC, I think having some bigger DEs on the roster would be a boon to the D-line, whether they are every-down players or situational.

Phil Loadholt signed with LSU but did not qualify. Also, can't forget Pete Dyakowski from Vancouver CC.

I wonder if the coaches aren't too fired up about the future at Defensive End. I thought we had some good talent at DE? Maybe they aren't developing quick enough?
