Talent overcomes coaching every time especially in basketball.

Johnny Jones and Kenny Payne would like to have a word.

Yes, you absolutely need talented players. But good, even great talent alone, is never going to fully overcome shitty coaching.

It's been shown over, and over, and over again that good coaches can take average rosters (relatively speaking) and maximize their output. Bad coaches take talent and waste it. Kenny Payne at Louisville had the 5th rated overall class going into last season. Only behind Kentucky, Duke, and Baylor, and just ahead of Michigan St, Oregon, Iowa St, and Kansas. He led Louisville to an 8-24 (3-17) record. A year later, with a completely new roster and, more importantly, a new HC with a history of success, Louisville goes 27-8 (18-2). A 15 (conference) game improvement! Is that because the roster suddenly got much better? Or is it because they got an HC who knew what he was doing?

Avery Johnson had some decently talented teams at Alabama with the likes of Herb Jones, Colin Sexton, John Petty, etc. The best he could manage was a middle of the pack in a weaker SEC and 3 NIT appearances. Alabama then hires a new HC, Oats, and within two years they become one of the best programs in the SEC and the nation year after year.

Great talent can probably get a bad HC from 3 conference wins to 6, maybe 7 wins. It can drag a below average coach to an average season. But it will RARELY win anything significant.

Fifteen scholarships, does anyone else think that even 13 barring no injuries is pushing it? We had difficulties assembling a 13-person roster, it’ll be fun to see how it goes with 15

King averaged 18.5 per game which was 2 ppg better than Carter (16.4) who led LSU, and Thomas averaged 15.6 per game #2 for LSU was Jordan Sears at 12.3. Of course, there is no way to know how that will translate coming into the SEC. Sears was averaging 21.6 PPG at Tennessee Martin.

You have to expect a shooter or two, at a minimum, to fill some of the final spots. We HAVE to shoot better. We need a hammer.

Would it be possible to label it as Men's or Women's when you start that subject? Thanks.

NIL rules. The HC matters little. MM will be fine with a large NIL budget..

Can we get a new coach in the portal?

Sorry ... seeing chaos with average players is hard enough.

Seeing it with talent is worse. Hope I'm wrong.

Will he? He signed a good recruiting class, but it ranks 9th in the SEC. He lost his best returning players to the Portal. The SEC will be brutal in basketball again next season, and CMM is way behind. I'm not sure he can significantly change that via the Portal.

We keep hearing over, and over, and over again McMahon has simply had no talent. But what is that opinion based on? The dismal record. That's it. But could it be possible the talent wasn't actually all that bad, but the coach was? Why is that possibility immediately dismissed?

In this very thread the OP is using the industry rankings to celebrate McMahon's recruiting efforts and suggest there is a big change. But lets use the ranking to evaluate the past.

On3 had LSU's transfer class rankings as follows:

2022 (no rankings)
2023: 8th
2024: 12th
2025: 53rd (currently)

If you look at just the HS recruiting rankings those classes ranked as follows:

2022 24th
2023: 41st
2024: 13th
2025: 19th (currently)

Now, for fun, lets compare that with Florida. Like LSU they are in the SEC. Also like LSU they have a 3rd year HC who came to the SEC from a mid-major school. However, UNLIKE LSU, they will be playing in the Final Four as a #1 seed on Saturday

On3 had Florida's transfer class rankings as follows:

2022 (no rankings)
2023: 5th
2024: 44th
2025:(they are kind of busy right now)

If you look at just the HS recruiting rankings those classes ranked as follows:

2022 29th
2023: 86th
2024: 84th
2025: 8th (currently)

Now many factors go into recruiting rankings. But when comparing the data it's hard to say Florida has significantly out-recruited LSU over the last 3 years...if at all. Certainly not enough to explain such a VAST gap between the success of both programs over that time period.

Florida: 74-33 (34-20); 2 NCAAT appearances; 1 Final Four appearance
LSU: 45-53 (14-40); 0 NCAAT appearances; 1 Final Four mini-basketball purchased at Pizza Hut.

Is it that the ranking/evaluating services have incredibly underrated Florida's talent over the last 3 years, while incredibly overrating LSU's talent? Or are their other factors that might be able to explain such a vast discrepancy in the results?

You must have the talent first. Dale proved superior talent will win more times than not. It's when you match up with equal talent that coaching becomes paramount. It's why we had so much trouble beating Bobby Knight.

I’m no expert, but can at least recognize base offensive sets - and effort.

We’ve appeared to have neither…

The bigger question is if they are #1 class…it must not be that strong of a portal class so far for true talent. $2M for a guard he better be giving you 20pts plus, 10assists and only 1 or 2 turnovers a night. Hope I am wrong but looks like just spending a lot of money to say LSU went NIL heavy and still not have a very good season. So they can pitch to the next coach your supported and have NIL $$$
