re: MBB Offseason '25 Transfer Portal Tracker

A small forward and a lower BPR than Givens, according to Evan Miya. Hmm… what are we going for here?

It’s a good get, but let’s hope we’re still in the mix with Jefferson, who by his numbers seems to be able to impact a game defensively as much as offensively.
We need some defensive firepower just like we need shooters on the offensive end.

Joshua Jefferson? He would be a good pickup. Seems to have good size and would be another big for us. If we get Jefferson, I suppose he would be a big upgrade over Collins.
We still need a great shooter from the outside.

The link says Honor Huff is 5’10”, 162 pounds. I wonder if that size would hinder his ability to hit threes in the SEC. I haven’t seen him play, but I suspect it could be a problem
In other news, A&M is gearing up for Bucky Ball. That’ll be interesting to see how the Aggies’ identity changes with a new coach

I agree that we need to find eight, nine at most to put on the court. Too many makes it difficult to find roles and rhythm.
The last thing we need is to load our roster full of 13 guys who all mostly do the same things. I kind think that was a major problem this year, one of many

Fifteen scholarships, does anyone else think that even 13 barring no injuries is pushing it? We had difficulties assembling a 13-person roster, it’ll be fun to see how it goes with 15
re: Dedan Thomas to LSU

This seems like it could be a good pickup from an offensive perspective but defensively we still have a long way to go. Thomas’ defensive numbers, according to Evan Miya, were 0.06. As a comparison, Jordan sears had a .8, and I personally was not a fan of what he brought to the table defensively. At least Thomas is a few inches taller.
I still think we need a sharp shooter and a rebounding big

Pettway’s numbers according to Evan Miya are quite poor. I fear if we get him it will be more of the same failure that could be a piece that shows McMahon the door. Just speculation; I’ve never seen him play, but I’m not sure that we should seriously target him.
White has good offensive numbers on that site but mediocre if not underwhelming defensive numbers.
Again, it’s just one set of measurements or one guy’s perspective, but neither Pettway nor White seem like they’d get McMahon out of suckville.
Of course, there might not be too many in the portal who could do that. Right now, exiting suckville for LSU basketball seems like trying to exit a black hole

re: V Miller and Corey Chest not even on the bench??

Seeing the product on the court, it’s not difficult to think the kids don’t like McMahon. Off court stuff easily makes it’s way onto the court; if the players don’t want to play for the coach, they likely won’t.
This, if true, is as big a problem as all his issues on the court, namely not being able to land and/or coach the right players.
Even if we get tons of NIL and luckily somehow land the right players, if they don’t buy into what the coach is saying or don’t want to play for him, we are toast even if we get everything else right.
We’re obviously seeing we’re in trouble on the court. But if there are issues behind the scenes, that’s even more reason to show McMahon the door.

I’m seeing the stats on espn. We are good at allowing layups and three pointers. It says in fact it’s all layups and 3s by A&M.
Last game was the same way. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that

Was it wilder and crazier that the fact that it seemed like Kentucky got every single point from either a free throw, layup or three pointer?
Not sure how many jumpers they hit yesterday, but it was very few
I’m tired of getting destroyed down near the basket. I hope the next coach brings some strength, toughness and size with him

Someone earlier mentioned Sanford coach Bucky McMillan. He might be worth considering. He’s turned around a smaller program quickly and before that was a dominant high school coach. Supposedly ‘Buckyball’ is an uptempo style, and he’s a pretty young guy.
Wouldn’t hurt to look into though I’ll be honest I’ve never seen them play. But his resume at least looks pretty solid so far

Whoever it is, we need someone with intensity and someone who can get rebounders and limit turnovers.
Not someone who says turnovers are bound to happen and therefore they can’t really be fixed… shooters of course are welcome, too

I agree with you there but that’s an entirely different issue—a very important one to be sure…
re: Borrowing Saban’s philosophy for basketball

When one player on the other team has the same number of offensive rebounds as your whole team, it’s recipe for disaster. Not to mention that we turned it over twice as much as Auburn did.
We’re not nearly good enough to give a good team that many chances

Good shooting is no doubt important, but I think rebounding and great defense can take some pressure off the shoulders of shooters who have off nights, especially by creating more chances via second-chance points and turnovers
Borrowing Saban’s philosophy for basketball
Posted by Horizon Imperial on 1/29/25 at 8:31 pm
I saw a clip earlier where Saban mentioned when he was with the Browns (and consequently thereafter in his career), he said his cornerbacks at minimum had to be able to tackle and also play man defense.
He said if they couldn’t do that, he wouldn’t go after them no questions asked.
Our basketball team should adopt the same idea: our players at minimum need to have strength and quickness otherwise we shouldn’t give them a second look.
Today we got manhandled on the offensive boards (involving strength and quickness) and we also had the ball taken from us way too much.
Winning the turnover battle and the offensive boards gives any team a huge advantage as it allows them many more chances to score. Auburn doubled us up in steals tonight and had more than twice the offensive rebounds… you can’t win against that
Simply put, we need more quickness and physicality. No matter who we have as coach, if we don’t have those two ingredients, we won’t have many wins to show for it

re: Headline in the Advocate: (How LSU basketball proved it can compete with anybody)

My issues with the team…
-Sears is too short to be a great perimeter defender and too inconsistent to be relied on from 3. He also has bad turnovers way too often.
-Carter can score but also turns it over too often.
-Collins is athletic but not physical enough to compete in sec play.
-Chest can rebound (see first half of bama game) but can also disappear (see second half of bama game).
-Bailey is not prolific enough to start—he just doesn’t try to score (or isn’t athletic enough to do so consistently).
Miller and Reed are injured compounding the above, numerous problems.
To me, the biggest issue might be the recruitment and performance of sears. He’s more of a player who should be a good second string guard who is forced to start—we have no sec-caliber PG right now. This is a player problem but it’s more of a coaching problem.
If we can’t locate the players (esp. transfers) we need and continue to incorrectly evaluate them, we’ll continue to go nowhere.
This isn’t even mentioning the challenges with designing good plays or the Xs and Os aspects of coaching, of which I also can see the reasons to be frustrated, nor is it mentioning the fact that we can’t land the big fish that we need to be competitive, e.g. the Cenacs of the world.
All around, there are numerous challenges the LSU team has to overcome—from players’, coaches’ and from the standpoint of recruiting—but it is seeming to be a very large hurdle, perhaps too large, for this staff to clear.
And the rest of the SEC is leaving us behind… making those hurdles seem even more insurmountable

It’s pretty rare that a person has almost 20 rebounds in a game but only gets two in the second half. Talk about a tale of two halves.
I was glad to see Green get some time. The result of the game, however, was again a letdown, especially considering how little Sears played

I believe we need a FS. Toviano should improve but struggled in the bowl game in his chance to show out. Gilbert might have been hurt this year but wasn’t great in the bowl game—I’m specifically thinking of one tackle attempt in a long play in the game. It was bad…
Perkins might be a Star. Maybe play spears at strong, but we still need an impact player at free. We can’t count on Gilbert and toviano right now. They’ve had chances, will no doubt have more, but they’ve been mediocre at best.
They might plan to play delane at FS, but we don’t know for sure…. I still think one more safety is a good bet that we’ll be looking for
