Exactly. We struck gold with 4 FROSH this past season, but to expect that to happen - especially along the DL (against SEC competition) - is a hard ask. I trust CBK and the staff to sign a top 5 class addressing roster depth/development, and add those key portal DL and DBs that we need to compete at even a higher level next season.

Is this still true? Seems like freshmen in the portal are good takes because they are less likely to leave again and also you may have a lower NIL range because less competition? Seems they have less leverage, so to speak. Assuming of course the student athlete is a quality fit in a position of need? This new world might be challenging the dogma.

Common sense says you close with all your high school Recruits for the early signing period in December. You reassess in January and you’re honest with yourself who may come and who may not and then work through the portal based on availability and what you need.

Kelly is working the portal. He just had two portal DL in this weekend for visits. What he's saying, is he wants to close this high school class then bring in the portal transfers. He has his priorities in order. And he's not hiding from D line needs. Be patient.

I think that’s right. Although we only have a small sample size of transfer portal players/timeframe, it appears the percentage of transfer portal players that contribute is higher than high school recruits; ie. hit rate. An interesting dynamic to watch the next few years to see how programs balance their roster and approach to transfer portal players. For example, do they take a reactive approach (filling holes created by transfers, HS recruit misses) or proactive (specifically filling certain positions with transfers vice HS recruits). Possibly a combination of both.

I thought it was common knowledge that you put most of your eggs in the high school recruiting basket until December 21st, then go hard in the paint after transfers, finish up with a few high school recruits in early February and finally pick up a transfer or two in the spring.
