It looks like Timberlake is down to UNC, Kansas, and UConn. Like Girard, nothing officially eliminating LSU but no signs they are in the race.

quote:Pretty sure I read somewhere that Arkansas contacted over 80 players in the portal. The fact is that all teams will reach out to 10 times the players they actually need. This goes for regular recruiting too.
Just how the portal works, you cast a wide net, bring in guys for visits you can and hope to get the number of commitments to help you transform the team in our case.

Hopefully, MM was able to lock up Baker on his visit b/c it sounds like SDSU is making a push to get him on campus. Baker used his 1-time transfer but then ended up redshirting, thus making him eligible to transfer again without a waiver.

Yep. Scott called that a week or so ago

Stewart would join Wright and Cook in the 400-600 ranking range based on various advanced metrics sites. For reference, Cam Hayes was the highest rated non-post player for LSU this past season, and he was ranked 800+. But some food for thought, Justice Hill was a Top 250 player last season when he transferred in. Some of these mid-major guy's game will translate to the SEC, and some won't. Wright is the surest thing, given his SEC experience.
ETA: these are overall rankings based on last season's stats and not transfer portal rankings.

I just know some Dunham dads.
But taking Stewart seems like it means we miss on either Abram or Pierre.
I guess we missed on Pierre, so Stewart takes his spot.
I'll say this, though - Cook, Stewart, Hayes, Hannibal, Mike Williams and Abram is a pretty freaking short backcourt. You would have hoped we could get longer; instead we might have gotten shorter.
Maybe you cover that with better three-point shooting. Can't get worse than our guards gave us last year.

It wouldn't be that short. Hayes, Hannibal and Stewart are 6'2, but Hannibal plays like he's 6'5. Mike Williams and Abram are 6'3. Wright is 6'6. Cook is the only short guard at 6'.
Mwani is 6'5 and Ward is 6'6", but both can play guard. Corey is 6'8 and Fountain is 6'9, and Reed is 6'10, but plays smaller.
If we get Baker, then we will just need a post player to defend the rim to round out the team. That would probably mean that we don't get one of the guards. I like Stewart better than Abram.

6-2 is short.
Go look at UConn. They didn't start a guy shorter than 6-5, and the shortest guard they played was Calcaterra who's 6-4.
If you're going shorter than 6-3 it needs to be a scrappy point guard who can steal the ball like crazy and bury 3's consistently. Maybe Cook gives us that; none of the others have demonstrated it (Stewart is a good shooter).
We're going to suck as to size and physicality, unless he comes up with some pieces I don't think he can. The 7-footer from South Florida would be a pleasant surprise.

Sasser and Shed at Houston are 6’1”. Same for Quinerly and Sears at Alabama. Those two were arguably the two best teams throughout the season.
You can win with guys like that if you have pieces around them.

The portal is open another month. Plenty of time for players to not be content with next years projection towards their future. I’m current not happy with the lsu teams future, however there’s time before we panic.

i would prefer at least one guard with size in the game.
hannibal was jacked and could rebound well for a guard. but he was so little he would do all these brilliant bullying moves to get to the hoop, then be way too small such that he had to triple pump and throw up a bad circus shot behind the trees. when he played with hill they were just too little to score at the hoop, and neither could shoot. useless.
need bigger guards. one lil guy is cook is ok. wouldnt want to play two lil guys. hayes seemed to play small. justice W was long. maybe mike williams plays a lil bigger.
i thimk they should start adding wingspan measurements to basic stats. as will wade said, you dont rebound and dunk with your head, its your arm.

Ide prefer 5 guards. 5 guards who get a minimum of 10 min each. Hayes, Hannibal, cook all could be replaced.
That’s the key, not front court.

They did add Wright who’s 6’6. Wright and Cook will probably start, with Hayes and Hannibal coming off the bench. I think our starting lineup will be:
Cook at 6
Wright at 6’6
Mwani 6’5 or Ward at 6’6
Fountain at 6’9 or Reed at 6’10
Baker at 7’
Size-wise that’s good. Let Cook guard the shortest player, and we should be fine. If we get Baker and a rim protector, then we’ll be good.

After last season it’s hard to nitpick size right now. You need guys that can score the ball or set someone else up to score the ball. Then you need to the Year2 guys to take large steps forward.

Agreed. Last years team had so many issues (scoring, rebounding, turnovers, defending) that it would be difficult to solve every single issue in the portal. Right now with the way its looking the team may be a poor rebounding team again, but at this point lets just focus on getting in guys that can get the ball in the basket more to at least try to get us competitive again
