Obviously, we’d all rather the team still be playing, but it’s fun to watch a pissed off Jay go scorched earth in the portal. Similar to the offseason after 2022. Add in the fact that one of his assistants was poached (not blaming Mainieri or Rooney, it is what it is) and it’s almost like Jay said

Not at all especially when Rooney was hosting recruits here just a few days before he got hired at SC.

If we can snag Root and then one more back end closer or long relief pitcher. This staff has a chance to do something special. If herring returns. I count 5 potential SEC starters.

I mean I’m not trying to argue but I just went through every single game he played this season. He raked all year lol. He hit 2HR in the 3rd game of the year. I’m not great at math but that’s about 25% of his season total right there
One of my favorite players in the class. Wasn’t trying to slight him

Some reports on Kilen (1) and Root (3) from a portal ranking piece by futurestarsseries.com
quote:
A decorated bluechip hailing from Milton, Wisconsin, Kilen is a talented hitter and defender with considerable ceiling. The midwest has become a hotbed for baseball the last five years or so and Kilen continues that trend. Kilen's brand is that of a sound, mature hitter with impact still coming. I's a very real feel to hit with the willingness to use all fields. He hardly ever strikes out and dominates pitches in the strike zone at elite levels. Kilen saw his exit velocities make huge strides in 2024 highlighted by a peak batted-ball event north of 111 mph.
He's growing into average raw power and could be a threat to hit north of 15 homers in 2025. He's a sound glove with above average arm strength and an internal clock. The whole profile is awfully polished with more impact on the horizon.
quote:
East Carolina has turned into a pitching factory the last handful of years and Root is just another exceptional product to come out of that program.
Root has a quick arm with a fastball up to 96 and although it features reasonably generic shape, Root did induce a 22% whiff rate on the pitch in 2024. At his best Root is generating seam-shifted wake on the pitch and producing close to 20 inches of arm-side tail on the pitch. When it gets too vertical, he'll lose effectiveness on the heater. The fastball isn't ever likely to become his primary out-pitch as Root throws one of the better sliders in the amateur class.
It's a super deep bullet slider touching close to 90 mph that completely falls off the table. His slider boasted an obscene 40 percent chase rate in 2024, one of the better marks in the country, complimented by 43 percent whiff rate. His changeup is equally impressive with huge depth and arm-side fading action. Both the cambio and slider have 'plus' upside, and he throws both pitches with heavy frequency.
Root pitched 68.1 innings in 2024, striking out 76 batters and walking just 21. Evaluators believe he could be in store for a massive 2025 campaign if the fastball takes even a marginal step forward.

That futurestarseries site is legit.
Pretty sure that guy nailed the draft last yr.
Did kush commit anywhere?
Any news of lsu getting another power bat?

Want both tbh. Jay can tweak Kilen with his bat to turn more of those contact outs into contact base hits. That would be a deadly bat that hardly ever strikes out and makes serious contact protecting someone like Jones and Hernandez in that 5 hole.

Short of a Braden Montgomery situation, it’s probably safe to say Jay knows the talent pool available this year. The latest big name entry I could find was Billy Amick on June 16.

Luke Hayden committed to us
ETA: he’s rated about the same on BA’s draft top 500 as Dylan Tebrake was.

Kilen went to the Cape last summer and walked more times in 28g (10BB) than he did in 54G at Louisville this past season (7BB).
28 Cape Cod Games (8%BB Rate) / 10 Walks
100 College Games (4%BB Rate) / 17 Walks

Hayden is a big draft risk. Will be surprised if he makes it to campus.

CPM taking that job and the way the regional played out sent him to another level.

An idea of Hayden's stuff.
Walks have been a huge problem for him. 90BB in 129.1 IP over 3 seasons. Bullpen guy maybe

Omaha’s the goal, but I love Jay going scorched earth when he doesn’t make it.

Nah I understand lol I was just trying to inform people who aren’t close to the situation what was going on. He tweaked it again a few weeks into the season. He’s definitely not a 20 homer SEC guy but it wouldn’t shock me if he runs 12 or so out of the yard if he is a full time player.

Sheerin went from 6'2" and 200lb playing 3B in high school and lowly ranked. Now he is 6'5" and 245 throwing 98mph on the mound.
Kilen is the number one ranked portal guy right now if I am not mistaken.

Not blaming maineri? It was a complete bitch move to poach one of our coaches when he has a key to the stadium
Yes, I do blame maineri.
