He had good numbers at Tech, and might find a role in next year's lineup.

I think Braun is essentially locked into the everyday 1st baseman job because we seem to be looking for another corner OF. And rightfully so, Braun with the eye test and on paper was a stud in SEC play

Limited versatility. 1B only. Decent bat with pop. Likely SEC caliber even. But Jay said it was develop over portal and wasn't chasing power.

Remaining portal dollars likely on OF MI (maybe) and RP pref LH assuming Garcia goes.

Rest of budget saved for fat HS class.

So chances are no.

In the other thread people ahve mentioned we are not pursuing or reached out to him. He has visited a couple SEC schools with another to go

It seems like Jay is happy to just have Braun locking up 1B

Im fine with that! Hell I thought he was damn good at 1B without focusing solely on that position going into the year. Imagine and entire offseason of him working on his 1st base skills how good he will be.

The portal (at least to me) seems to be way deeper with options in the OF. If you like Braun at 1B, then it makes sense to just be in the OF market instead of moving him to pick up a 1B.

We can’t make the same mistake twice and go so portal heavy that we run off our guys we’ve had since high school. Braun, Serna, Arrimbede, William Patrick, Ruckert and Pearson should be the heart and leadership of the 2027 team. It will be nice if some transfer steps up as well and takes that role but you don’t know what you’re getting there in the portal so take it as talent first with hoping there are some with leadership.

I'm not convinced about Patrick, Ruckert and Pearson offensively. Pearson is also a big gamble defensively.

I hope he's right, but the teams in Omaha right now have a significant makeup from the portal.

They also need a 3B, especially if Milam doesn't come back. Pearson isn't the answer.

So your solution is to bring in a left-handed Hawsey to play third base and create a spot for him by pushing his high school teammate off the roster.

Holy shite.

No. If a portal OF doesn't emerge, Braun is a capable outfielder. I would like to see a corner OF and 3B from the portal first.

We have Braun and Serna and Arambide to keep happy. between catcher and maybe first if they give Serna some reps there to keep him happy.

Then if Pearson doesn't look more mobile at 3rd, you have him in the DH role.

So we really do not need another first base type, bigger guy and power hitter as we already have these 4 guys competing for those reps possibly, depending on how third base shakes out.

Jay has said he will now recruit and play his guys for what they recruited for. Braun was ranked as the #1 First baseman in the country. CJJ regrets not playing the younger guys that LSU recruited to play their position and then get portal guys that didn’t pan out. I’m sure he apologized to the younger guys just as he said so in most of his press conferences.
He wants to keep Braun to play 1st Base and he will. He won’t get Hawsey who is strictly a 1st baseman and rock the chemistry again.

Braun has played well at 1B but even Braun said his predominate position is OF and when asked why his recruiting profile has him as a 1st baseman, he said that it was likely just how they projected him but that he never played 1B in HS. It was something he said in an interview after the 1st game of the season when he was in the lineup.

If we need an outfielder, why not move Braun to right field and sign Kawsey? Solidify two positions.

I mean we didn't REALLY go super portal heavy this past year. We only had 2 every day players who were one year portal guys (some combination of Yorke/Simpson/Carraway/Dardar).

When everyone was healthy, it was rare that more than 2 were in the lineup once conference play started. In 25 we had 3 every day guys who were in their first year out of the portal. In 24 we had 1 every day guy in Braswell and then Bingham. In 23 we had 1 in White.

The problem was that only Dardar was able to come close to his prior production (he was injured half the year, so I'm cutting him some slack). You can be super portal heavy, but they just have to hit. Last year they didn't.
