We might be.
But you can spring with as many as you like.
Gotta be down to 85 by end of August
We aren’t rolling with just 5 or so dts we have.
We need 2 or 3 more dt.
And you’ll see another certain position get sanded down by 5 or so in the spring portal.
Kelly will have the 85 by the right time.
It’s the total opposite than how he received it.

Shand is stronger in run defense than Smith. That will be an improvement from last season. We just need 2 stud DTs from the portal. As it stands only Shand, Guillory, and Lee are proven to be able to take SEC snaps.

Yep, the last thing they need to do is waste a valuable scholarship on another Duce or Denver.

I like focusing on guys that want to play here rather than a one year mercenary looking for a payday

A proper staff will evaluate talent inhouse thoroughly before bringing in every Tom, Dick and Harry in the transfer portal.
Nobody has asked them to do that, but picking up a couple of decent defensive tackles is a no-brainer. Pete Jenkins even told them how thin we are at that position. I don’t know of any coaches that take Pete Jenkins with a grain of salt.

Last I read, they’re at 90. So people clamoring for every transfer coming out of every school might want to take that into consideration.
LSU already has to process 5 guys on scholarship by the season rolls around. They pick up anymore out of the portal, that’s someone else on the current roster losing their scholarship.

That’s great till they want more money next year

May be true for defensive backfield, but we actually just need bodies at DT.
If they thought they just needed bodies they would not have processed the DTs on the roster who weren’t contributing. Everyone seems to forget that LSU brought in a lot of bodies on the DL last year and that didn’t stop them from having a poor season. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

15.5.6.3 Exceptions. [FBS/FCS]
15.5.6.3.1 Midyear Replacement. The financial aid of a counter who graduates at midyear or who graduates
during the previous academic year (including summer) may be provided to another student-athlete and the replaced
student-athlete shall not be a counter for the remainder of that academic year. In bowl subdivision football, an
institution may use the midyear replacement exception only if it previously has provided financial aid during that
academic year to the maximum number of overall counters (85 total counters)
That's the rule. You can only replace what you've lost up to 85 at any time.
What it means
Kids that are seniors that haven't graduated and still on scholarship count towards the 85 max number even in the spring. You can never go above 85 scholarships. Not ever. Hence
All the talk about being against the numbers
Kids being asked to pay their own way for a semester
Why schools don't have 100 kids in the spring and just cut to get to 85 in the summer.
Not picking on you personally just tired of this notion that we can have any amount we want during the spring as arsenal to further the "what is our portal strategy" debate. We don't have room to go balls out and take any kid we choose. But I'm sure we will have some genius come argue against the actual rule because a message board poster told them so.

Understood. But you cannot be perfectly under 85 all the time.

Regardless. We need DTs.
We are possibly going to get Bussey.

That’s a lot of DBs. With so few DT.
Some will be processed.
DTs need to be added.
What is the punishment for being over 85 at any time? I don’t know.

As opposed to what? Lol are you under the impression that other staffs are focused on things other than talent and character..?

When people say we need “bodies” it is understood that they mean “bodies who are at least capable of playing snaps in the SEC if necessary”. The guys we processed were not capable of playing SEC football.
The idea that the coaching staff doesn’t think we need more guys at DT—that we are totally fine entering the season with guillory, shone Washington, jalen Lee, and dom McKinley as the ONLY IDL ON THE ROSTER—is completely and utterly ludicrous. Even if all four of those guys were established players that wouldn’t be enough. Four guys is like the bare minimum you need for a given game, and there WILL be injuries throughout the season. This isn’t a position like WR where clear starters will play every snap - you NEED to rotate. We can barely even do that at full strength, and that’s even before getting into the question of whether these guys are actually good enough.

The players who transferred to lesser programs or still haven’t found landing spots.

I agree that they want more quality depth, which suggests they have not identified any players who fit that description in the portal who aren’t overpriced. Many of the DTs that have entered the portal have done no more to prove they are SEC quality than the players LSU let go.

You can and must be at no more than 85. It's literally the rule. It's why schools have to balance early enrollees, transfer out and in, pro declarations and mid year graduates to make the numbers work at any particular time. Under is allowed, over isn't. Covid years not withstanding.

I don't know either. The rule book is over 460 pages. I was looking for scholarship limits specifically and then stopped.
Agree about needing to add DTs. Most do. Seems they have plans with the new JC kid and the mystery grad transfer. Guess the 4/16-4/30 window will tell the tale.

So I’m fine with continuing to add DTs over 85.
It looks Like there are only two from Michigan State available to add now.
Again, there’s like 20 scholarship dbs on this roster with only 5 or so dTs.
