I believe the first national signing day happened in Greece. The first LOI was delivered from Sparta to Marathon. Unfortunately, the messenger Pheidippides died upon arrival in Marathon with the LOI still in his hand. That's when they decided it was time to develop better methods in delivering LOI's.

$180,000 at least.

mostly, yes. but in cases someone may not have a functional internet connection or their connection can be periodically unreliable. phone lines are typically very reliable. some vendors also favor fax more than internet, so a fax machine, which costs practically nothing to maintain, is preferred in those cases, as well.
What High School in America doesn't have the internet? Let alone, what High School in America doesn't have someone with access to an iPad with cell service.

we had a recruit a few years ago that had no video b/c apparently nobody in their county had a cell phone, VHS recorder, etc
LET'S NOT GO TOO FAR WITH THIS

What's wrong with fax besides being "outdated"?
I think the big question is who handles the other methods you mentioned? The HS? College? The NCAA?
Is the NCAA privy to what athletes have offers? If the college is responsible, which school provides the means for an uncommitted athlete?
Too many kids to accommodate everyone .
Fax to me just seems the most efficient to me. In terms of time & money.

then, tell me how many people you've known have had their email/facebook accounts hacked versus how many have had their fax machines hacked.
this is a non-issue, i know, but who gives a shite if people still use fax machines? why are you so hell-bent on recruits being able to submit a LOI via iPad?
i'd say that some students from lake providence, with a median household income of $16K, may not have friends who own iPads with cell service. so, i guess they shouldn't be able to sign a LOI, right?
and i'm not shocked that someone whose avi is "Golfer" cannot fathom that some kids don't have enough money for the interwebz. good luck with your putting.

I can sign a $60,000 loan with an e-signature but LOI's are still Faxed?
Will never understand this...
I though this was a good question until I thought more about it...
For work, I too digitally sign documents on a regular basis and think nothing about it. I just assume everyone does it. Then I thought... How many 18 year old kids actually have the ability to digitally sign anything?

I send and receive multiple faxes every day. It's a beautiful thing.

Couldn't these recruits use their high school's secured computer system to email their LOI's?
Heck, with today's classroom technology they could do a video conference (webex?) with the university's compliance officer simultaneously who could guide him through the process until it actually arrives at the site. It's not an overly complicated procedure.
The only caveat would be the recruit would have to initiate the video conference since NCAA rules prohibit the school's making that contact (I believe).
It just seems a whole lot more "21st century", and the email would seemingly be a lot easier to disperse.

F it. we should just teleport all recruits to the LSU AD building on NSD. that way, it'd be high-tech enough for everyone.
