We go from 39 Scholarship players to 98 (with maybe 2-3 more in February) in 2 years. Now who do we lose to get to 85? Who gets let go?

Don’t think we are at 98.

We have until August. Spring practice will likely lead to more transfers. We’ll be fine.

I'll give you 11 i don't expect back with LSU for 2024..J Williams, Emery, Lunsford, Gilbreath, Carpenter, Lee, Chestnut, Harris, Langlois, Brooks, and Dibert. I also might add another TE to join Gilbreath in leaving. That would still leave LSU with 3 TEs.

Somebody said that super seniors don't count. If true, that could save us a handful.

Also, your thread title leads like a question but isn't. Weird.

Seems like Josh Williams is trending to come back. You may lose another Wr or 2 (besides Nabors and BTJ) and 1-2 more OL to the draft and portal

We’re going to lose a few more players to the draft, and couple more will “decide” to transfer. It will take care of itself, but we have until the summer to get down to the sholarship limit. Keep in mind, scholarship limits and roster limits are different numbers. Walk-ons do not count towards the 83-man scholarship limit.

Isn’t it 85 now? Also, I do believe this is the first year you do not get the exemption for super seniors. I could be wrong on that though.

LSU plays three TEs a lot. We need more than three or we’ll have to eliminate part of the playbook.

That rule ended after 2021

There was only a one year grace period for Super Seniors and that was 2021. Since 2022 all scholarship players count toward the 85. There is no roster refief there.

The 98 figure should be 95. Turner is declaring and playing in the Senior Bowl. Emery I truly believe is out of eligibility or at the very least will be physically unable to play next season. And I don't think Brooks will be playing football in the near future, he has a long road back physically.

As to the 95 figure: that only accounts for Thomas, Nabers, and Turner declaring for the draft. There are a lot of players that will need to make a decision to stay or enter the draft:

1. Dellinger
2. Frazier
3. Smith
4. Wingo
5. Burns
6. Penn
7. Diggs
8. Jones
9. Shand
10. Swinson

realistically, I can see anywhere from 4 to 7 of the above declaring.

As to your list of 11:

Williams is leaning towards coming back and will be needed if Diggs declares for the draft.

Lunsford was having a good fall camp prior to an injury that sidelined him for a period of time and still was running 2nd team when the season started. Depending on declarations, he may have a prime opportunity ahead for himself.

Gilbreath is doing exactly what he came here to do, block and develop as a blocker. He made some strides over the course of the season after an atrocious opening game against FSU where it seemed like he missed every block when he was in the game, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Lee, if you are talking about Khayree Lee, he just signed on Wednesday, he will be here next season.

Carpenter I think will be back.

Dibert may become a numbers casualty.

Please note that under previous recently passed NCAA rule(s) a school is locked into keeping players that transfer into the program until their eligibility expires, the player declares for the draft, the player decides to transfer for a second time and have to sit out a year or the player graduates and transfers as a graduate transfer. Really cannot process same. So. Lunsford, Chestnut, Brooks, Harris and Gilbreath would have to initiate their own departures from the program.

Chestnut is trying to graduate in order to transfer as a grad transfer.

Brooks will probably be a medical retirement.

Lunsford may try to be a grad transfer or stay if he sees a path to the field due to draft declarations and I think any decision he makes will be based upon these factors.

Harris is a fubar situation due to the NCAA rules denoted above. You cannot boot him and he has so far has failed to pull his head out of his arse. Unfortunately, he may take one of the 85 spots in 2024.

All this is before any additional additions in the signing class or in the portal.

ETA: need to pull Penn off of the potential declaration list as he has announced he will be returning and adjust from 4 to 7 tp 4 to 6 declaring early. I forgot about that.

I think PART of the obsession with TEs out the wazoo is Kelly but I think a lot of it was also Denbrock...so adios. I don't remember 3 TEs that many times actually anyway. The numbers don't add up...LSU had 5 OL, 3 WRs, and 1 QB. Even with no RBs, that leaves no more than 2 TEs on almost any play. I'll stick with my prediction that 3 are gone. One has already left which leaves 2 more.

I think Dellinger played very well and could go around or before the third round. I also read where Miles Frazier was considering entering the draft. This is now like the NFL and cuts will have to be made. Some, not getting playing time will leave and others for various reasons. But it's nice to finally have a full roster for 2024.

Williams is already coming back. We literally just got Gilbreath and he's more of a offensive lineman than a TE. Think Dillion Gordon. Carpenter isn't going anywhere either. Kid was a true freshman last year. Lee just transfered here last year. He has used his one time free transfer.

To my knowledge, Williams has not said that. He only said he was "leaning towards coming back." No way is Williams back if Diggs comes back. Williams playing time was greatly diminished with the Diggs addition...not to mention Holly, Jackson, and now Durham. And to answer another poster, the Lee I was referring to is Jalen Lee, who could be a graduate...out of HS 4 years. Lunsford should definitely be a graduate since he is 2019 class. I still don't see any problem with LSU getting down to 85. I only see only 2 more potential additions...DT McKinley if he wants in and Bussey the CB.

You know that one free transfer rule is about to go the way of the Edsel right? The NCAA already lost via the temporary injunction in the courts for this BB season. Their one time free transfer rule will be thrown out completely. The courts don't look too kindly on ANY restriction against players...so good luck on that staying around.
