Can LSU take portal guys now, process guys in spring, and take more portal in April?

Let's say LSU takes a 5* portal guy this week. Can CBK process the bottom CB in the spring?

Stated differently:

I know we are limited to 85 and that number is getting tight.

We certainly appear to need LBs.

IF we take highly rated players at other positions, we may run out of room for LBs.

But what is to stop CBK from taking a 5* CB now, evaluating players in the spring, and processing LSU's lower-evaluated players in April thereby making room for LBs?

If so, the number are not as tight as they seem.

I guess you could but you'd make other players in the portal second guess coming to your school. The current rule says you can only transfer once without sitting out. So guy in December says he is transferring to LSU. CBK tells him March that it isn't working out. Then he has to transfer to another school and sit out a year before he can play.

That's not what he is saying...

He is saying take the 5 star guy, and cut a 4th+ string guy at the same or different position to turn the addition into an equal trade

I don't think he was talking about the same player coming in and getting processed. That although still possible, would be really bad karma, and would look REALLY bad to anyone thinking about transferring in.

In terms of bringing in a 5* and then telling the 2* on your roster to hit the bricks, sure. That was being done before the portal was a thing, they just had to go down to FCS then. Still not a good thing to do, but if you have a 5* linebacker showing interest after spring and you have a 2* DB that isn't going to play and you need that roster spot? Saban would pack his bag for him.

I want to say the cutoff date is the beginning of the fall semester. You have to be at 85 by that date. You can go over it beforehand.

And you won't have that problem in the spring anyway, because all of your seniors and kids who've turned pro come off the 85 and the high school recruits who don't enroll early won't count against the 85 until they show up for fall camp.

We still have about 6 spots right?

Correct. We're sitting at six open spots as of right now.

The good news is that other than LB, we're pretty set. We could always use a DE, a C, a RB, or another QB but those would just be depth or experience adds. I feel like we could take the field with what we have now if we had to.

That changed this year. Now you cannot exceed 85 scholarship players at any time.

That being said, I’m not sure whether they are counting NLI’s as scholarships for these purposes. If not, then you can still work around it in spring because as you said, the non-EE freshmen will not enroll until summer.

Processing players in general has become considerably less common since the autonomy conferences (read: power 5) adopted guaranteed scholarships. It still happens but nowhere near as much as it did before. A coach can’t really force a player out - he can tell the player “I think you should look elsewhere” but the player doesn’t have to leave unless the coach can show that the scholarship is being pulled for disciplinary reasons.

The other thing to consider is that we may lose more guys in the spring transfer period anyway. In which case it becomes a non-issue because that opens more scholarships.

If we're sitting at six open spots right now I don't see how not having room is going to be an issue. Are we sitting at six open spots counting the incoming freshman class that arrive in the fall?

Pretty sure that is correct. I also believe that we will retain a few spots for the Spring portal window. Might lose a couple and pick up a couple.

That's right. We have 37 on offense...

WR (10): Nabers, B. Thomas, Lacy, Hilton, Ibieta, Sampson, Brown, Parker, Prean, Anderson

TE (5): M. Taylor, Mashburn, Pimpton, Markway, McGohan

OL (13): Campbell, Dellinger, Turner, Frazier, E. Jones, Bordelon, Makeanole, Martinez, K. Thomas, Heard, Adams, Chester, Mubenga

QB (3): Daniels, Nussmaier, R. Collins

RB (6): J. Williams, Emery, Cain, Goodwin, Kaleb Jackson, Holly

And 38 defensive players...

DL and JACK (16): M. Smith, Wingo, S. Jones, Guillory, Wiggins, Shand, J. Jefferson, J. Lee, Oghoufo, Swinson, T. Hill, Langston, F. West, Womack, J. Howard, Carpenter

LB (5): Perkins, Penn, West Weeks, Whit Weeks, Braithwaite

DB (17): Banks, Brooks, Burns, Ryan, Welch, Langlois, J. Allen, D. Harris, Z. Alexander, JK Johnson, Chestnut, Hughes, Stamps, Toviano, Kylin Jackson, Daugherty, Yaites

And 4 special teams guys...

Bramblett, P. Todd, S. Roy, Dibert

That comes to 79. So we have six spots left to fill. Honestly, it's unlikely we'll fill all of them anyway, because even if we found six more guys we want the chances are pretty good that a Bryce Langston or Kimo Makeanole will drop off after spring ball. And you usually hold a couple of scholarships open that you'd give to a walkon.

Nothing and yes, they can do that. They probably will do this to some extent. Expect many more transfer in spring especially on DL and OL. There's way too many players at DL on the roster right now. I'm sure they're being told they all have a chance to compete so when they're buried on the depth chart, they're going to transfer.

Very likely we won't have an 85 man roster again this year so 85 is pretty much irrelevant anyway. They're not keeping everyone on the roster right now past spring and I'm willing to bet they have at least 1 head scratcher that transfer or surprises. Never fails.
