This is all that matters. If the team and coaches are willing to welcome him back so should we. The purpose is to win games and compete for titles. He helps in that area if you can make him content enough to play the games. No harm in trying.

You say he is a generational talent based on what exactly? A recruiting ranking?
How many true freshmen have been day 1 starters at LSU? It’s not a very long list.
You can argue about whether he’s a “generational talent” but either way, he was the best TE on the roster week 1, as a true freshman, after a weird offseason.

Wait to see how generational Kyle Pitts is in the draft. Gilbert has the physical talent that Pitts has but has not put it together mentally... yet. If he does he will be that good

He’s going to have a lot of work to do just to get eligible.
Furthermore, the wrs are about 7,000 catches into the offseason of 10000 catches.
What has he been doing this off-season will be important.

You sure about that?
I thought dj mangas said they were only doing 5,000 since they started late.

Lol! I really don’t have the slightest after Kou Moore said he had more than everyone else.
Posted on 3/27/21 at 8:49 pm to dstone12
Who believes Koy Moore though?

Go and look at my post history. You’ll see that I defended him from the outset of this situation. I haven’t changed my stance on anything. So, you may want to amend your statement.

So has anyone determined why he was back in BR or still all speculation at this point?
Posted on 3/27/21 at 11:19 pm to RUKIDDINGME
Might be seeking a release to be immediately eligible at another SEC school
Posted on 3/27/21 at 11:22 pm to WMTigerFAN
This is the very definition of speculation...

This is the type of unnecessary distractions we don’t need after last year. O better keep a short leash on this saga. Focus on the future. Sure he’s great but an all pro tight end is a luxury not a necessity. We need him to continue to put pressure on key target areas. After this weekend, if he doesn’t come back then don’t bother. This is the biggest spring in a long time after a botched year.

When was the last time a football team won a national championship without Super Star players. Lawrence, Burrow, Jones would have been average without great WRs and Running Backs.
With Boutte, Palmer, Moore, and Gilbert, and the talented QBs we are a force.

quote:while I get that it may be the offense that deterred him, how can he not think the real difference was in the QBs? In his first 3 games he had 14 receptions for 177 yards and 2 TDs with Brennan. With a true freshman QB still learning how to play QB, he had 21 receptions for 191 yards. Hell he would have had over 200 yards and 3 TDs in the first 3 games had they had him in on the play Carter let the ball go straight through his hands.
I agree. I would rather have him on my team, rather that on a team we might have to play. I think he signed with LSU because of Joe Brady's offense in 2019 with hopes that it would be the same in 2020, but was disappointed with what he found. I think the addition of DJ and Peetz lured him back to the good guys. I say give him a chance and if nothing else let him ride the pine at LSU until he convinces the coaches that he's all in, rather than allow him to become a weapon for another team to use against us.
He was on pace to break every SEC freshman TE record

quote:It took Pitts 5 games, IN YEAR 2, to do what Gilbert did as a true freshman, in 3 games. Pitts had a full spring and 2 falls, with zero covid restrictions. Pitts had Dan Mullen as well. Pitts had to develop into that kind of monster, Gilbert was a freak before he stepped on campus. This guy is a 1000+ yard 10+ TD player if he starts this year.

No matter what that guy said, Gilbert is a Travis Kelce prime Gronk type freak TE. I don't know when the last time a TE like him has come in from high school, and been that much of a physical freak.

I am only doing this for fun.
Can you compare him to Darnell washing ton out of hs?

Who is "we"? You the fan? If it is a "distraction" to you then who cares? You don't really matter.
The only "we" that matters are the players/coaches on the team. If THEY don't see him as a distraction...then he's not a distraction.
I don't know the scoop on the situation and frankly don't really care at this point. But if he does want to return then the only way that should be allowed to happen is if the TEAM wants to accept him back. If they do, great. What the fans think about the situation is wholly irrelevant.

Like all decisions, this comes down to risk and reward.
Personally, I think the risk can be mitigated in a few different ways. LSU needs to position itself as the solution for this kid's problems. Let him know that playing time at the moment isn't on the table for all of the reasons we kind of know about.
Instead, he can be a part of the program and work on all of the issues that need to be worked on...with the opportunity to hit the field when everything is behind him.
If it's schoolwork that is the primary issue, then it's a semester or more. If it's suspension, then it's whatever that is. If it's a mental issue like has been speculated, then you probably are investing the entire season to helping him.
Frankly, if LSU approaches it this way, I don't see much risk. If he never plays, LSU has positioned itself as a program that is willing to do the right thing for its players. If he ends up playing next year, he's a difference maker on the field.
