Would it be stupid to spread bahia seed in the tough spots of my yard?

I've got St Augustine in my yard and there are some spots that are bare because the soil is kind of compacted and clayey. The St Aug would usually grow there, but the crew that cuts my grass cuts it low so that it gets stressed and doesn't spread well. Full disclosure, I don't foresee this crew lifting their mowing deck in my yard every time and they're cheap enough that I don't really blame them.

That brings me to my question: could I get a bag of Bahia seed and put it in the spots where the St. Augustine has thinned out? It gets cut weekly and I don't care what kind of grass I have as long as it's green. Any downsides to this?

I love my Bahia. I have several acres of it and in 20 years have never watered it, fertilized it or maintained it in any way except mowing. It’s deep green, drought and pet tolerant, super tough, crowds out weeds and the only thing it can’t deal with is deep shade.

and it can be cut low

I don’t deal with either one. I know both are coarse grasses, so if the color somewhat matches, why not. Check compatibility before any herbicides, of course. MSM Turf is safe for St Augustine but will torch the Bahia, for example.

The Bahia is going to spread. And it grows really fast especially if you are getting rain. You can cut it one day and it will be tosseled back out in a couple days.

No way I would do that. I would put up with multiple weeds before bahia.

HELL NO, dont put bahai seeds in a st Augustine lawn. Or any type of lawn. Mow it today and have a 2 ft stem sticking up tomorrow. Trash Grass.

You want to really green it up? Spray it with MSM! Thank me later.

NO. It’s course and rough and tough on mowers and feet. I have it in some low spots and pasture and it’s crap for a yard.

Ask cutting crew to cut your grass to the height you specify. This is not at all an unreasonable request. The sooner the better.
