Would anyone recommend a fiberglass pool over gunite pool if I don’t want a custom shape?

Wife has me pricing pools. Have a gunite builder lined up for a quote. Would anyone recommend a fiberglass over gunite if I don’t want a custom shape?
Should I just dig a hole and throw my checkbook into it instead?

Do pools add or subtract value to a home?

Actually, yes. You will have to resurface the gunite in 10 years. A fiberglass will last damn near forever. Check warranties and such. There are no longer liners required for fiberglass which is also nice.

We built a pool over the winter this past year. In-ground gunite rectangle with an elevated spa spilling over into the pool. The cost was high but it was a solid construction job, I was able to supervise the job and was happy with it. Our kids are young and we plan on getting plenty of use out of it over the years. We also put a nice size travertine deck around it, and its nice to sit out there on weekends and enjoy coffee looking at the pool and waterfall.
Pool construction is a shady business, so do your research on builders. There are a lot of guys who just slap some letters on their truck and try to undercut everyone else's price.

I bought a small Intex last summer to see how much they would use it. They loved it. I have 2 boys (4&7)
I know I will use it after Mowing etc.

I would just go with a smaller nice gunite pool (12-18k gallon). If you keep the water balanced properly, mainly keeping pH and total chlorine in check...your gunite will last a very long time. We have a 15k gunite pool with spa overflow. It's the perfect size for our family and is relatively easy to maintain due to size.

If you are in BR, call Brad Keller, Keller Pools, if you want gunite. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Fiberglass is just as or more expensive than gunite depending on size. You're actually limited by size on fiberglass because they have to drive it down the highway and set it in place. Also, fiberglass won't work everywhere. If you have a high water table it can float. Neighbor of mine got a fiberglass pool and had a nightmare. A small crack appeared after they set it, probably from a rigging error. The contractor drained the pool to patch/repair the crack. A big rain came and floated the drained pool, all the concrete coping busted out and caused more damage to the pool and sidewalk. Now the neighbor is in litigation, but the contractor went out of business. The hell with that, go gunite or liner pool. FYI, I have a liner pool and it was half the price of gunite. Even if I replace the liner 7 times over the next 20 years it's still cheaper than gunite.
Also, if you move out of this house, you're probably not going to get a return on your investment at all. It's totally a luxury expense, so think of it that way and invest wisely.

That's how we started out too. Get a sand filter on the in ground pool, it beats the hell out of pulling the cartridges and washing them out. A bigger pool is a lot easier to keep up with than a small above ground pool.

Thanks gents. Thanks for the recommendations.

Both.
In my case I won’t even look at a home that has a pool for numerous reasons. Child safety, maintenance, upkeep costs, loss of lawn space, etc

4 & 7. The thing that concerns me about vinyl is my dog scratching it.

Gunite is your best option then if you have a dog that will be in it a bunch. Our dog hated getting in the pool, but some dogs love it like if you have a lab or something. If you don't go too crazy on design or size and cancel out the hot tub, you can get a decent gunite pool for under $40k. Adding the bubblers, sun decks, hot tub/heater will get you up over $60k.

A pool does add value to a home but not nearly the cost to put it in so don't think of it as an investment.
It also limits your market when going to sell. There are more people looking for a house without a pool than with one.

Any idea of the cost of just this portion of the build? I'm looking to eventually replace or reno the decking around our pool and was considering travertine.

Why do people say pools are money pits. I don’t spend much at all and use it every day once it warms up

I've had both, if you're not insisting on a custom shape....I'd go with fiberglass.
