Just don't use a MERV level above what is recommended by your HVAC manufacturer.

Personally, I prefer the ones made to be cleaned and reused. I believe for my 24 x 24 it cost somewhere in the area of $45 to buy. I take it out once a month and hit it with my shopvac to get the big stuff off and then hose it off with a high pressure straight nozzle on my garden hose to clean any dust in the mesh.
I've had this filter for 3 years and still going strong. I do have one of those throw away filters I put in its place when cleaning the filter until it's dry.

The $5 cheapest home Depot one available. Mine does have secondary filters but they stay pretty clean. Don't want to restrict the AC with thick merv rated filters. I have separate hepa filters for filtration. I'm trying to stay as cool as possible in the summer.

I’ve been using these after doing research on the heavy thick pleated ones, which I used to use exclusively. Used to get a 12 pk for $56 delivered, butlooks like they don’t currently have the 12 pk in this particular size.

Flanders HVAC filters and Aprilaire filters seem to have the best reputation among HVAC techs on the professional HVAC forums I follow. I use Flanders E-Z flow filters; Flanders make lower MERV fiberglass spun filterglass media & higher MERV pleated filters. Aprilaire filters probably have the best reputation but they are 4 inches thick require a special filter housing, i.e., they don’t fit the common ceiling grill return air grill that accommodates 1 inch thick filters. I will say that the box store Filtrete pleated filters don’t have a good reputation among many HVAC techs because of their restrictive air flow.
I would suggest that that if you using the 1 inch thick filters that you stick with lower MERV fiberglass spun filter, like MERV 4, so as to minimize return air flow restriction to the evaporator coil - restrictive air flow in time can shorten the operational life of the HVAC. Change the cheap MERV 4 filter monthly during cooling season. If the filter grill can accommodate a thicker 4 inch filter then a higher MERV 13 pleated filter is perfectly fine.
The thing to remember is the purpose of the air filter as far the HVAC designers are concerned is to protect the HVAC equipment, not to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) for the occupants.

This is what I have on all three of my units. They were a package deal when I replaced all my units. I replace the filters once a year.

I used a little cheap one month filters. Buy them by the dozen and just change them out every month

I use Filtrete but FPR 5/MERV 6 basic filters. Zero reason to use higher rated filters unless you have the surface area to make sure the flow restriction is within limits and you have a very well sealed system. Basically nobody meets both characteristics in a residential system so it's just a waste of money to buy higher than basic filters.

Can you unit handle a Merv 12?

Any suspicion that this is driven by wives, "but muh allergies, MERV97 is the only thing good enough for muh babies!"

Stick with lower Merv for 1 inch filter. If your return has the room for it, get a 4 or 5 inch thick return grille filter with 1 inch lip. Then you can get a higher Merv. They also last longer - I replace mine every 5-6 months.
Here's an example

my 4 ton unit has an electrostatic filter in the return ducting. the tech said don't bother with the fancy stuff, just the one month will do. plus it's much quieter than hearing air trying to be sucked through the MERV 13 ones.

Thank you for pointing that out to me. I can say with 100% honesty that I've never even looked at the "merv" rating or whatever that is until you pointed it out. I've always just looked for a filter that filters allergens since I and my kids have bad allergies. Now I see that I've apparently been potentially hurting my unit.
All the issues I've been having with it short-cycling and my HVAC guy never once thought to bring up the type of filter I'm using.

Edit: apparently my unit is equipped to handle a MERV 12 filter. Learned something new today -- that there's a lot about fricking HVAC filters I don't know.

I'd try some Merv 8 or lower and see if you can notice a difference with your allergies. They'll be cheaper too
Seems like a 12 would be too constrictive even if it says the unit can handle it
