What is the point of dining room tables with a "leaf"?

I don't get this. Why not just leave the table open, at its full size, all the time? Either it fits your room with the leaf in, or it doesn't. Presumably it does fit it, or you wouldn't have bought it.

What am I missing here?

Since 95% if the time, a dining table is used for the immediate family of about 4, and only rarely needs, say, 8, at a table, leaves make practical sense for a table

So what do people do with that extra space they're getting 95% of the time? Does it just sit unused making the room look bigger? I can't really put furniture there, since I'd have to move it to use the leaf.

Or with a leaf it’s slightly tight but do’able for special events.

My dining room is open on two sides. So when we need to seat 8-12 we throw the leaves on.

Not sure why this is a hard concept

So does the table sort of stick outside of the room when the leaves are in, and that's OK for special occasions but not OK the rest of the time?

I guess I'm trying to understand why anyone would ever take the leaves out if the table fits properly with them in.

Answer my damn question then, Einstein. A couple of people seemed to hint at the fact that space gets tight when they use the leaves, but they still like having them. Fine- that's a reasonable answer.

Is that all there is to it? I guess it is, since you added absolutely nothing to the discussion but seem to think there's an obvious answer out there.

If you want to be nice maybe you can try to answer my actual questions. Do you own a table leaf? What is it that compels you to remove it after your guests have left?

Ours has four leaves, they stay in all the time so the table looks right in the dining room. When we bought it the leaves were optional. I would guess it makes it easy for them to build one table that can accommodate many different room sizes. Without the removable leaves, it would be a bitch to move to another house too.

Yes, it’s a little too big for the room for every day use with the leaves in, so you just pull them out for special occasions.

You’re missing that people often buy high end, heirloom quality dining furniture, and expandable tables mean the piece will fit into a variety of room sizes over the life of the furniture. The other factor—sitting at a large table with just a few guests is awkward for conversation and less than cozy. So you shrink the table to fit the group you’re seating.

Sometimes we have 6 eating and sometimes we have 10-12.

10-12 can't sit at a table without leafs but they can with the leafs.

I sometimes lurk this board for lawn and garden information and stumbled upon this nonsense. I just wanted to stop in to let the OP know this is one of the worst posts I have ever seen on the Home and Garden Board.

I hope you find the answers to all of the great mysteries of life.
