re: What is the point of dining room tables with a "leaf"?
We bought a big table with no leaves and you're right some people may see it as awkward.

We usually use one end and the other end can keep the boardgame going without picking it up

LOL, that's a feature.
I bought an 8-seater bc I loved the design/style (natural cherry, japanese through tenon trestle table), but at times, I wish I'd gone with a 4-top round that expanded with leaves into a 8 or 10 seater with rounded ends. Kinda like this: LINK

So you don’t own anything that is extendable or collapsible?

Because that would just be more square footage for my wife to pile laundry on.

The other factor—sitting at a large table with just a few guests is awkward for conversation and less than cozy.

What are you talking about. This table with all the leaves in would be perfect for your Covid Thanksgiving celebration. Social distancing baw.

Many houses had shared kitchen/dining before the big house craze in the US. In 1970 the average house was around 1600 square feet. A leaf provided great flexibility.

Well, my table has two inserts and table fits fine with or without. We remodeled the house and took out sewing room enlarging dining room. I personally like the openness and walk through. Simple as that. Holidays and parties, I know inserts will be used along with another table for seating and table for desserts!!!!
