What are the proven methods for eradicating bamboo?

I bought a house with bamboo that is taking over. The original owner planted it to use as tomato trellises and now it is out of control. Is there anything that works short of getting a back hoe in there and ripping it out?

Do a little research but I think Arsenal will kill it.

start with ripping it out, then begin chemical treatment. It will take some time

Go plant some at the old owner's new house. It won't help you get rid of it but it will make you feel better.

I actually never used any chemicals. I just cut it all down . Then attacked and cut up all the shoots that kept coming up.
Took the course of a couple of years to completely rid of it.
It's the rhizomes the bamboo has that keeps its energy going. But, if it can never leaf out, it will eventually go away.

Simply crushing the shoots stops it from spreading. Some varieties are easier to control than others. If you choose a good variety with a proper plan to control it Bamboo is a great screening plant and bamboo poles are infinitely useful.

Hack it down and put in a rhizome guard in the path it is spreading, and then start attacking it inward. Chemical herbicide and then take a pick axe to any new sprouts by taking out the rhizome.

I found the best way is a long sawzall blade with cross cuts threw the roots then just keep mowing over it.

Yeah....a nuclear arsenal will get the job done.

Imazapyr is the active ingredient. Polaris AC is another trade name and can be found in smaller quantities like quart size bottles.
It is soil active so be careful around desirable hardwoods. Follow the label and don’t fall for the if a little will work a lot will kill it more dead approach.

Once you cut it down keep it mowed. Or cover it with black plastic for a season (larger than the area) then it will struggle to survive and eventually die.

Back hoe to rip it out worked for me. Didn't treat with anything else and have not seen one trace of it since it was ripped out.
