I would look at CZ. They make some of the best anywhere and are usually a bargain especially when the stock guns shoot so well. The clones are really good too.
You can band them even if the won't fit in a conventional bander.

One of the cheaper units $50, is called a California Bander. I banded a full size Nubian with it and other than being a two person job it was a snap. You could band an adult bull with that one!
Overseas markets do not seem to care whether goats are banded or not. Domestic meat goats are preferred banded.

Male goats have a disagreeable habit urinating on there faces to attrach does in heat. Mine do it all the time. The does love it, my wife is appalled.

I tell people at the petting zoo never pet a goat with a wet face!
Still having issues with the feeder working consistently. The problem with most game feeders are the smallish feeder funnels that can create voids or bridges.

A bridge is a dome of feed that prevents feed from getting to the impeller in the feeder pump. It starves the feed pump.

If the throat is larger it is difficult for a bridge to form. Voids do the same thing, starve the feed pump. And keeper the feeder full minimizes this. Having a wide feed funnel reduces void issues as well.
After 2 weeks of testing, and some minor modifications I have been able to adapt the Moultrie Directional Feeder to feed my small goat herd.

You must make modifications to the feeder because Moultrie originally used the feeder to disperse dry feed the size of corn or peas. Sweet grains are somewhat stickier and can jam up the feed system.

Truly it would work better if it were 12 volt instead of 6 volt and they made improvements in the impeller design but as soon as the goats hear the sweet grain going to the trough they are there. 21 seconds at high speed in the morning and 15 seconds in the evening is more than enough grain.

I but in alfalfa pellets which I think helps the feed system but I am cutting the amount back. If you use pelletize feeds that are dry very little modification is neccesary or modification may not be necessary.

The clock in the system is not properly compensated and can drift in minutes. I guess that is not important in a game feeder. Considering how uncomplicated the design is, some cheap PLCs would make the system far better.

The hopper design does not favor sweet feeds. If you wanted to attach to a more sweet grain hopper the simplicity of the motor mechanism is so simple it is really probably still worth buying the entire system and throw away the hopper!

I customized a feed system with PVC pipe. After build it to tolerate the goats shaking the feeder system it working pretty good.

re: .38 SUPER....thoughts?

The modern .38 Super is a good solid round. It was popular during the Bonnie and Clyde era and was quite good in its day.

Metallugy was not all that great then which contributed to its weaknesses. However, there are other good rounds out there than in the modern era are exceptional such as 9mm Largo (9x23).

But the limiting factor today is finding .38 super at the store. I was about to switch over 9mm Para because they are effective but when the drought hit, 45 ACP was far easier to find then 9mm.

38 Super has the problem of using small pistol primers which means your 38 Super ammo is hard to find, like 357 Magnum, or my favorite 7x25 Tokarev.

While I think 38 Super is a good round unless I had a good source for the ammo, I would stick with either a 9mm or 45ACP. 38 Super was mostly a police round back in the Bonnie and Clyde days.
Remember with .22 LR quality ammo is a major concern.
Poor guy if you have an HOA. No sense in feeding that sickness with a neighbor. I was so proud a few years ago when I found out my daughter's first question when looking at houses was, "No HOA, right?" She is her own HOA and proud of it!

So far none of my neighbors fussed, and actually they were positive. Several of them told me about raising livestock with their parents. I think risk from food shortages have changed a lot of people minds.

I testing my automatic grain goat feeder (not gravity). Right now it is working fine. If it works for about 4 more days, I will test for a year (weather) but for $160 it is a good solution.

When the kids come over to refill the hay feeder, no one has to go into the yards. As long as the tank is filled on the feeders it is a good arrangement.
Banding older nubian goats. How old is too old?

Alternatives to banding?

ANSWER:

You can band an adult buck and how cooperative the adult buck will be depends on the buck.

However, the scrotum might be too large for the bander. There are a number of banders that will work with a adult goat or cow.

One of the cheaper but effective solutions is called a California Bander ($30-$50 depending on configuration). Still cheaper and less taxing on the buck.

You can find videos about its use and application on YouTube. Search for California Bander.

One thing that is not in the video is the reaction of the buck. 5 minutes after applying the band the bucks reactions were all normal. Less then an hour later he was acting like I had put the brain around his brain!

He was on the ground fussing about it acting like he was near death. By evening feeding everything was fine. By the next morning you would never know he was banded. All behaviour normal.

Some of the videos do not call attention to reaction by the buck clear and only mention it in passsing.

Consult your vet for professional advice.

That buck is fine today and is one well behaved goat.
Bike store and get a trailer for the kids. Trailers a lot safer than seats.

If you take a spills do the the kids. Get the right trailer and even if you tumble the kids do not. Yes they are more expensive but lots safer.

Water well pump for 2" line.

I am thinking this needs a jet pump, I have a 90' water well I haven't used in years (PVC 2") and am thinking about restarting it.

The original Ruth Berry is shot. And I have both 120 and 220 in the barn, who should I replace it with?
Really if you are just doing yard work hydro is fine. You you are doing farm work shuttle shift is better.

I am doing farm work and I am happy with shuttle shift.
Not worried about reselling at this point. However, your point is well taken and noted. I had already considered that which was the readon I was asking. If I do try to sell them I could do that.

However, there are other options. In the Muslim community some of the mosques have a day where they secure goats for the congregation according to my next door neighbor. When I get to that point, I may check into that.

Pardon miss[ellings. I do not have my glasses on.

re: Where to get goats processed?

Yes I am well aware of the processing time delays. That is why I checking for places that do goats.

I know I could probably do it myself and may have ro, once I learn how. I have been told it is very close to deer except the meat has more fat htsn deer have.

Cutting is suppose to be different. I think YouTube make be a little too woke with vegetarians to be a lot of help in this regard.
