Mates, Ukrainian father in law used green drywall behind our new bath remodel. I'm a newbie and knew nothing - plumbers didn't say anything like "don't do that".

Now I'm watching horror videos of people who didnt use cement board and/or schluter Kerdi behind shower.

Is this salvageable or do we need to take down the green drywall and switch out to Schluter Kerdi or Concrete?

It's a total culture thing - he does this all the time in Ukraine and he got pissed at me suggesting taking this drywall down and redoing with proper materials.

Cement board

It would be ok with waterproofing as is if it’s seldom used but while it’s all apart easier just to install cement board or backer board

Thanks - the problem is that I don't think we can just put kerdi or cement board OVER this drywall b/c then the tiles and grout would make it way too thick and it would overlap the new tub too much.

FIL wanted to just use that waterproofing liquid or something but I don't think that's good enough, do you agree? We spent all this time and money on this project and I don't want to do something that will cause disaster 3 or 4 years down the road. This bath / shower will be used several times a day it needs to be done right.

If you are talking about that red stuff, yes, it is awesome. Just put several coats, and you should be fine.

How long is he going to be in town? I feel like this isn't your first time posting about him.

Are you sure? I take several showers a day and we're in Oregon so it's usually cold in our house and then super super steamy when we use the shower / bath. I don't want to cut corners at all.

He's been here for 2 months and staying another month. He works really hard but it's frustrating with the language barrier and the culture barrier on things like this.

WTF? Maybe you could cut down to save the drywall.

That's the stuff. My contractor who built my shower put up 1 coat and told me to do 2 more over the weekend. I did 6 all the way up the wall and the floors. He said that if we ever have a flood, I could use that redguard shell I made as a life raft.

Kerdi installs over drywall, why not just use Kerdi?

Do the Kerdi membrane over the drywall. That is what it's made for.

Even if the drywall is like patchy and rough? I guess we’re leaning that way now I’m just concerned about us truly getting a great seal that is steam proof. How do we better prep these gaps and things? I’m also worried about how much the tiles will cantilever out over the lip of the tub with all these layers of drywall redguard mortar tile etc

It’s moisture proof Sheetrock so use the sealer and you will be fine. He needs to work on his cuts.

MR Sheetrock has been used for 50 years and was used before cement board was invented. Use real cement plaster if you want the best results.

I would tear out and use durock if it was me just for piece of mind but thats just me. Look at starrtile on youtube, he uses greenboard and redguard on everything. If you decide to keep the greenboard, I would get some of the fiberglass tape and run it in the corners, all over the niche and bottom lip. Check out laticrete hydroban if you want a high quality waterproofing membrane.

Use the vent, you can get one of those humidity switches that automatically kick it on and off.

Set the drywall like normal and lay down the red guard. You’ll be fine.

As mentioned several times, a roll on waterproofing membrane will work. Look at Mapei Aqua defense or Latticrete Hydro Ban. If you actually follow instructions, you will see that these two products require less coats, better results, and you can install faster on top of them once dry, than red guard.

I'd use redguard or Kerdi. First choice would be Kerdi. Everyone seems to love it.

Don't make you FIL tear that shite out. Concrete board would've been bestest but definitely not worth upsetting the old man. If care is taken with the waterproofing details of the redguard kerdi then you will be fine. Looks like you have a niche planned so pay particular attention to that as they can be problem areas.

OP, lay that rdeguard or kerdi THICK in that niche. Get those crack full of it. Actually, lay it thick in all the cracks.
