Can’t have both. Water too expensive.

Early morning is best, but the plants will be happy to get it either way

I feel like early morning it gets so hot so quick. Late evenings may give more absorb time

Just make sure you've gotten down appropriate fungicide

Doesn't nature tend to send water mostly during afternoon thunderstorms this time of year?

Like already mentioned-----make sure you have a good fungicide since most advise against late watering as it promotes fungal issues with plants and ground wet overnight.

Also, just wet the soil around the plant, not water directly on the plants since that can also cause fungal and mold issues.

One of these days I'm going to spring for a well just for irrigation purposes.

Morning. You have a higher chance of letting powdery mildew set in if the garden is wet overnight. The leaves can dry off in the sun.

I only water at night when the plants absolutely need it and I forgot to water that morning.

What are you trying to water ? The July producers, southern peas, okra don't need daily watering. Melons either, but I guess they would take it.
