Bought a home and it was not maintained very well, the back porch had some vinyl soffit issues(hole and was pulled back). I was hearing something I assumed to be a racoon because before they sold it to us there was a handyman removing a dead one from the garage walls and redoing the sheetrock.

I called someone who captures racoons and he told me it was likely a squirrel(s) but he didn't handle that. He suggested I throw something up there to repel the squirrels so I threw some ammonia soaked rags and waited a few days and then I put up new soffit and sealed it up.

I didn't hear anything for at least a week and thought I had claimed victory. Then I heard more, so I bought some:
Rat Trap

I heard one go off within 5 minutes of setting it! Nope a freaking small rat I have tried moving them around and setting them in different spots(there are a few spots with pine cones, some half eaten) but nothing, they are smart and are avoiding it. I have used dishwashing gloves to not give scent, put peanut butter, they don't touch them.

I finally discovered where they are coming and going, a small hole under an eave where they punched a small hole in the fascia. I just threw some mothballs and some tennis balls soaked in ammonia where they are active. I took one of the rat traps and wedged it outside of the hole so I hope when he comes out it gets him.

But I'll be honest, I don't have much hope, sorry for the novel but there are sooo many suggestions, and nothing has worked so far. I really don't want to hire someone if I don't have to, i've been told places may charge thousands to handle it.

While I was typing this up I heard a big commotion, followed by a dog barking next door big time. I ran outside and the trap was gone, hope he dies lol, at least I got him, dunno if there are more.

Update:

the trap had gone into the gutter, so I didn't get it! I did get a taller ladder out and wedged another one in there good so hopefully better odds this time

That's the one.

Had any personal experience?

Not in the attic, but I've caught a ton of them in my yard with it. Those little bastards were picking tomatoes and peppers out of my garden. Not to mention they would demolish my sunflowers. Started trapping and caught probably a dozen the first week. Slowly stopped having squirrel problems.

ETA: most I ever had in it at one time was 3.

Get the smaller version of the trap pictured above. Bait it with peanut butter. Let that sucker go 15 miles away at a minimum, or just cook some rice.

In the summer when the attic is 150 degrees, they will move out. That's the time to patch every single hole, new roof, whatever it takes, and it will take money. Lots of money. But it sounds like you bought a house that you knowingly knew was not well maintained so I assume you had already budgeted for things like this, right?

Lot of experience .. stopped counting at 26 squirrels a few years back when I started trapping…I usually only catch a few a year now…

First they tend to not go into the live traps on the attic… they mate a lot and will move into your attic soon and you will hear them arguing…you can plug the hole with screen and steel wool… but if they want they will then go to another corner and chew a new hole…
Best is to catch them outside in the yard..fence line etc…

remove all branches overhanging your house or clear paths to your roof and soffit..this alone will help a lot.

Get a live trap and set it outside… I built a deck on my fence where I know they run and set the trap there…smear peanut butter and jam on a cracker and place on trap spring… get popcorn kernels and drop some on each end of trap and a few leading in to trick them into going in…

If willing invest in a whisper pellet gun..

I live in suburban katy and it is amazing how many squirrels and possum’s I have caught..

Make a one way door over the hole you found. They can push it open from the inside but can't open it from the outside. Kind of like a flap that hangs over the hole. You can make it out of some type of hardware cloth. Tons of videos on youtube on how to do it.

As stated earlier, they will move out when it gets hot. Also trim back your limbs and kill everyone of the those mf'ers with a pellet gun that you see around your house.

Never tried the squirrelenator but the live traps work great OP, I have 3 for my rental properties I’ll set them all out as well as snap traps. The live traps seem to work the best and they are kid friendly so you can put them anywhere. I’ve had rat problems and caught squirrels first, I used to have rats in a bird feeder and I’d always catch a damn squirrel or 2 trying to get the rats. Birds too for that matter.

ETA: the live traps are sold at most Ace hardware stores for around $30

That is one thing that is on my list, trimming trees off the house.

Unfortunately I can't set a trap like that, it's in a corner of the attic that is just can't be reached on top of a cathedral ceiling.

Once i'm sure they are gone, I can seal the hole from the outside.

Do what my friends dad in NOLA did growing up - “hand me my .22 pistol son, you kids go play basketball af least a block away, I’m going to get the dam squirrels.”

As we walked away - bang! Bang, bang! Muffled cursing.

Have pets? Those ultrasonic devices work. Just pick one that has good reviews. I don't think pets are too fond of them so if you have pets it may not work for you.

It doesn’t have to be inside where the squirrels are located, just set it outside where they hang out. You’ll catch them outside easily. They don’t stay inside during the day.

I’ve also scared squirrels out and then sealed it up. Take a broom or pole and lightly bang the hole where they are located and you’ll scare them out fairly easily. Then Spray foam and steal wool works well to seal the hole temporarily. Put some steal wool in the hole and then spray foam around it. Then once you have them caught and removed, finish the hole properly.

I battled squirrels in the attic for almost 2 years before finally winning. I'll try to remember to post my lessons learned. No time right now.

Eta: OK, here we go.

Number one lesson to learn is that you cannot merely trap or kill your way out of this problem. I tried. I trapped, shot, poisoned, etc. and they always, always came back. You have to fix the structural issues that are allowing them to get into your attic.

The squirrels will find cozy warm air coming from your attic in the winter time and chew through any weak spots.

Long story short, you need to be trapping the ones in the attic, shooting the ones in your yard, replacing any weak fascia points with metal plates, sealing all roof vents and exhausts, and cutting all trees well away from the house.

I had to buy a completely new roof and have wildlife biologists do a complete seal on the entire house (twice). No squirrels for 6 months. I still shoot every one I can.

That sounds awful!

My issue is knowing whether I am sealing a squirrel in or OUT???

I am working on the trees right now, I have identified 2 entry spots right now.

I used to love squirrels, now I HATE them

You can trim all the tree limbs away, but if you have electric/cable on poles where you live, the squirrels use those wires as a highway. Your electric wires go from the pole and directly to the roof on your house.

Since we put a metal roof on our house, the squirrels don't get on it. It is weird.
