Just expense - good bit more expensive per 1000 sq ft to use granular, than spray version, and Specticle is not cheap in either form.

Good to know. I’m on a postage stamp sized lot, so the 50# will cover at least a couple applications.

I’ve read that it’s frowned upon to spray fertilome which is apart of the winter cocktail during green up(which is happening right now). Are you saying it’s fine because it’s such a low ratio of the cocktail? I’ve seen conflicting reports with broadcasting it over green up.

Is it too late for Pre-Emergent in the BR area? I have some Prodiamine on hand but worried I waited too long with it already pushing 85 degrees .

Yes, you can still apply. Weeds that have germinated won’t be affected but new weeds will.

Question for the experts. I applied Specticle Flo on February 5th. It seems to be doing a hell of a job based on the lawns in my neighborhood.

Based on the previous threads, I put a few dates in my calendar for the year to re-apply. I think I fat-fingered something, as my reminder just said to apply Specticle this weekend again. I cannot find what I based the dates off of either. (2/5, 4/15, 9/23)

When is a good date to put down pre-emergent again to cover the hot summer weeds?

Coming here to post the same question, especially given how warm it seems to have gotten already

After seeing how well Specticle worked on my yard, I don't want to screw it up and have the summer weeds take root. I do think I somehow got the interval wrong because 2.5 months seems way too short.

Do you have issue with Doveweed? Seeds germinate around soil temperature of 70 F - hence the recommendation for a late April-early May application, as Specticle is one of the few pre-emergent herbicide which is very effective against Doveweed. With a approximate efficacy time of a about 3 months, mid May is an appropriate application time given the previous mid-Feb application. Fall - late Sept is good for our area.

Thanks Craw! Yes, I’ve had lots of doveweed issues. It was partially to blame for me deciding to resod my backyard. Being torn up for a pool didn’t help, but prior to that I lost large areas of centipede to it. I’ll bump my calendar back to the beginning of May perhaps. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge so generously

Rotate pre ems. You don’t want to use the same one every time. Specticle is the best overall. Save that for whatever your toughest weed is. In DFW it is rescue grass and poa. Winter annual weeds that I would use specticle on. Barricade is great against crabgrass which germinates at 55 degrees so that is the late winter pre em.

Just to add about summer weeds! They aren’t too terrible in DFW. We don’t have doveweed or many other weeds that pre ems control so I don’t use them. We have typical vbw and nutsedge but those are controlled with post ems.

Msm will work on VBW but I prefer Celsius. Seems to work faster with less applications. Regardless of which you use be prepared to do at least two applications.

What I’m doing for my lawn - I’m using Prodiamine or Dimension in late Winter (Feb), Specticle in late April/early May (Doveweed has became a bear in my lawn the last several years and Specticle is doing an excellent job on it) and then I repeat the Specticle application in fall (Sept). Calcs show I’ll get 4 years per 18 oz bottle, with 2 applications, for my 10,000 sq ft lawn with 2 apps per year.
