Spring Pre-Emergent - Baton Rouge Area

I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a bottle of Specticle Flo. Any of our lawn and garden gurus have a great rule of thumb for application timing? A reliable calendar date or just soil temp monitoring?
Centipede/St Aug in the front yard. Zoysia Palisades back yard. (if that matters)

The general rule of thumb is Valentine’s Day, Memorial Day, and labor day. But the weather has been so wonky, who knows this year….
Greencastonline tracks soil temps and is a good tool.
Note: it’s better to be early than late, once weeds germinate, you’re toast.

The rates for centipede/st aug are different that for Zoysia. So you'll want to use the lower rate. 6oz per acre off the top of my head. I use Specticle in the fall and prodiamine in the spring. Specticle will prevent weeds for longer than prodiamine so your application timing doesn't have to be as accurate. Last week of February would be a good starting point.

I picked up my bottle of Specticle yesterday from SiteOne. (very easy to deal with)
I noticed this on Cleggs' FB page this morning. Does this impact the timing of spring lawn weeds?

Better to err on the side of applying it too early vs too late - the first week of Feb would not be too early to apply it in my opinion. There is fair amount of rain forecast next week if you want to time the application to water it in.

Current 5 day soil temp in Baton Rouge is 53 so I don’t think spring leaf out is too rampant but it might coming sooner rather than later. My 5 day average is 43 so I’ve still got a few weeks.
You can put specticle out at any time from this point on.

How much was your bottle of Specticle Flo?

$280 before tax. Just north of $300 all said and done

What’s the application rate for that? How long will a bottle last, or what is the estimated sq ft for a bottle at st aug rates ?
Posted on 1/30/23 at 9:51 am to DickTater
An 18 ounce bottle would cover 3 acres of St Aug.

Based on my previous calculations with a 1/2 acre lot. (less area once you subtract house, shed, office, pool, driveway)
It should last me for nearly 3 years @ 3 x year application rate. Hurts up front, but it's not a terrible cost. Plus, how much will it save me on herbicides to tame weeds that take over?

I was reading the label insert, is it best to do a split application? 45 days after the first vs a single ?
Are you adding anything else while you’re at it? Post emergence control or any insect control ?
I wish we had a sticky with common agents, with dosing guide and using multiple agents during a single app …all mixed in something common like 1 gallon per thousand foot .

I’m on the Specticle Flo bandwagon.
I’ll get into the label later but if someone wants to break down mixing instructions or tips that would be great.

Yes - for a common residential lawn that is correct. I have 9500 sq ft of lawn to spray, and my calculations show, 3 years @ 3 applications per year per 18 oz bottle, or 4 years @ 2 applications per year.

43,560 feet in an acre. 6 oz per acre. 6oz=177 mls. 177/43.5=4.06. 4.06 per thousand square feet. Spray rate of 1 gallon per minute and a 3G backpack would 12.18 mls per backpack.
In terms of application you have to have a fan tip nozzle. Nozzle height should be knee high. Spray in straight lines and not in random patterns. Give it a couple pumps every few steps.
I am in DFW and have been iced in all day so I have had 2 beers. Someone with a calculator check my math.

4 mL per 1000 sq ft = 6 oz/acre labeled rate.
I personally shake the bottle real good, use a larger 10 mL syringe with a large gauge needle (like a turkey injection syringe) to withdraw 4 mL (pour some from the 18 oz bottle into another smaller wide mouth container first) then inject the 4 mL into 2 gallons of water in a 2 gallon sprayer, shake to mix, and then spray 1000 sq ft of lawn.
If you have a 4 gallon backpack sprayer, then use 8 mL of Specticle in 4 gallons of water and spray 2,000 sq ft.
Don’t forget to water it in within several days in the absence of rain.

Boom!!! My math was right but I spray a little faster. .67 brass tee jet tips spray heavier

I feel like I usually spray less than that. Should I walk extra slow?

Well no - I should have qualified that obviously add the 4 mLs in sufficient amount of water that allows to cover 1000 sq ft of lawn. For my walking gait and sprayer(s) that’s about 2 gallons. For you could be a 1, 1.5, … gallons?
The goal is apply 4 mL per 1000 sq ft - think of the amount of water you use as strictly carrier to evenly disperse that 4 mL, and not as a dilutant.

In theory, could you: (?)
- calculate the mLs needed to cover your area
- Dilute that amount into a hose-end sprayer jar
- Set the dial to a volume that would allow you to cover your area/drain the jar in 2-3 passes
