How do you know if the contactor is bad vs the capacitor?

But if you need one quickly I found a local ac supply shop willing to sell me a capacitor even though I was not a licensed installer. Most of those small shops are willing to help out homeowners
Where and what is this Vicksburg supply house. I’m pretty close to Vicksburg and I’ll be damned if everytime this damn AC blows a capacitor it’s not Friday at 8pm. Would like to have some on hand.

If the capacitor is bad it’s usually bulged out on the top or bottom. You can also test the capicitance with a multimeter and see if it’s in range with what the capicitor says on the label.

It’ll be whichever one you don’t have.

I use supplyhouse.com. I bought start and run capacitors for 1 unit as well a spare for the other unit. Prices were better than Amazon. I bought the Amrad capacitors. That Chinese crap breaks too soon.

I get my from Marcone or Ideal locally.
I keep two spares on hand inside the AC contactor box.

My local electrical supply shop sells them for cheap. Its where the AC guys buy theirs. Just take pictures of the labels and they can fix you up.
I would probably avoid Amazon cause its probably junk.

You can buy good American-made capacitors on Amazon - I buy AmRad capacitors through Amazon. Many HVAC supply houses, at least in my area, won’t sell capacitors or other HVAC electrical components to retail customers.

Last time I had a cap go out, I couldn’t find my spare so I had to get an Amazon same or next day anyway. Turned out it was in the pantry and the box it came in kinda made it look like a coffee product.
It’s a good idea to keep one around if you don’t have multiple units though.

I looked up the correct Amrad cap on their site and ordered from Ebay for $33 to my door. I didn't buy the $90 Turbo 200 adjustable cap.
This thread and others like it should be a sticky.

There are ways to test with a DVOM if you know what your are doing. The most obvious sign will be that the contactor doesn't "suck in" when there is a call to the condenser. Contactors can also stick open or closed. Just an FYI, even brands like Trane cheap out on contactors, my brand new Trane 3-ton has a FLA rated at 30A which is a bit low for a 3-ton and there are reports of these contactors sticking already in new equipment so I've ordered a Jard 17425 40A replacement to have just in case.
