They look good, but the spines on the trunk and fronds are torturous. I had one of the long and brittle trunk spines go through my glove and into my knuckle. Cleaned it out as well as possible but one day later in in urgent care with a swollen hand and an infection. I hate that plant.

Hooked a chain to my truck and pulled every one of those SOBs out at my last house. That was a good day.

People still pay good money for those things. Dig them up and sell them.

I still like them. Retro landscape. They look good when they get really big. I don’t see what the big deal is. Trim them once a year with gloves on?

I remember back in the day people were stealing them from other people’s yards.

Never been a real fan, but they sure put two in front of every house built 20 years ago.

They have their place, but that place is not within 10' of any place a human can get to. Truly painful bastards.

Fun fact: They are among the oldest plants alive. Fossil records date them going back about 200 million years. They were a common food for dinosaurs during the Mesozoic era.

For those mentioning their toxicity to dogs, note that they are poisonous to pretty much every mammal, including humans. it's just we're less likely to eat them.

and never get near them again? mulching, trimming adjacent shrubs, digging up pups, and the spikes go right through regular garden gloves. Hate, hate them.
