Honestly what purpose do they serve I can’t think of anything but to sting the shite out of me when I’m cutting grass.

On a side note how do I get them to stop building nest in my metal fence? Because I don’t know they there until I hit it with my weed eater and by then it’s to late unfortunately

What material is your metal fence? Square tubing or drill pipe? Either way, Amazon has plastic caps that just push in there to block them off.

Search that diameter of the pipe or tube plus tube cap or pipe cap.

So if it's 1 1/2" square tube search 1 1/2 plastic tube cap or something like that.

I share your distaste for red wasps. Damn things are a nuisance. I always like to see birds feasting on them, which may answer their "purpose" question you had.

I believe they eat a lot of lawn pests.

They do. They feel larvae mostly small caterpillars and worms as well as nectar. They don't provision nests like other species of wasps, but feed the larvae directly. We would have a hard time living without wasps. They (all wasp species collectively) catch a massive amount of caterpillars and worms that feed on pretty much everything.

They're also okay pollinators.

You need to get yourself some of these moths.

Sooty-winged Chalcoela Moth

They parasitise paper wasp nests. They fly in under the cover of darkness, land on the nests, and deposit their eggs in the cells. Their eggs hatch and the larvae feed on the wasp larvae.

This one was on my porch last Summer.

yes red wasps are excellent garden predators which is why you don’t spray broadcast insecticides. The good thing about them is they will nest elsewhere if you destroy the nests in places you don’t want them. In lieu of wasp killer a jet spray from a hose will do the trick, and the adults will move on. Just make sure to dislodge the nest from its perch and give it a good stomp when it hits the ground

I did have to spray insecticide down a cavity wall on my deck as they were getting in thru the deck board gaps, that was non negotiable as it was next to our outdoor shower

I am unclear on the various species, but I have both the solid red and the ones with some dark on the abdomen. The solids always nest where I cannot get to them. I had to use Great Stuff over my columns to keep then out of there. The ones with dark abdomens(metricus?) always nest where I can eliminate them. it's all out war this year.

All are paper wasps. I have a Northern, but can't find the pic right now.

The last three pics are from the Spring where they're gathering wood fibers to make pulp and turn it into paper for their nests. They're fairly interesting creatures, as long as you don't spook them near their nest. They're only territorial and aggressive near/on the nest. When at flowers, gathering fiber, hunting they aren't at all aggressive. I had a Red land on my hand last Fall when taking pics. I didn't swat, just let it chill until it left after a few seconds.

ETA: Here is the Northern:

all cool until you get stung and pass out and wake up in a hospital because you're allergic.

didnt happen to me, but a neighbor who thought they were not allergic, turns out they were.
