I just purchased an 80V self propelled mower. Already mowed the yard once. Battery still at full. 18,000 sq. ft. lot, but I have lots of that covered with house, drive, walks, pool, patio and landscaping.

Had Toros and Honda's for years, and a Snapper. Thought I'd give this a go. So far so good. Battery warranted for 3 years and mower for 5.

I have a Toro Timemaster. Amazing cut. The Personal Pace def propelled system works great. If you don’t want to drop that much, the reviews on the Toro Super Recycler are good as well. I picked up a mint condition barely used timemaster last year for like $500 and it was a great investment

Make sure you get a Honda and not a Honda for Home Depot or a Honda for Lowes or from Walmart.
I don't know about the other stores, but mine came from Home Depot and it has been running strong for almost ten years now. I have replaced parts here and there (carburetor, belt, etc.) - and of course the pre-season oil change and tune up. Nothing major. Best mower I've ever owned.

Checking back in- I used my Honda for the first time yesterday. I bought it at Home Depot it is model HRX217VKA - $599. 21 inch cut, variable speed self propelled with a rust proof deck. It's my first pushmower as I have moved into a neighborhood

The mower performed great. Starts on the first pull, easy to start and mow. Took me a minute to get used to the self propelled portion, I had to play with it to get the speed dialed in. I am happy with it- for my little yard it will do just fine.

Saint Augustine in South Florida requires weekly mowing about 9-10 months of the year and bi-weekly the other 2-3. I had a Craftsman w/ 7 HP Briggs & Stratton. Got rid of it after 10 years of deterioration but the engine never caused a problem and was still working great. Bought another one (6.75 HP B&S) and haven't had a problem with that one either for 6 years other than a snapped pull cord that was simple to fix.

I have been looking at getting the Kobalt 80V for a while now. just struggling with that price tag difference between that and a gas powered.

Which brand did you get?

I've got a cheap non propelled one that works very well. Honda engines are built to last.

Lowes was running a close out price of $299.00 on last year's model that came with two 2amp batteries. This one that I purchased, however, was $599.00 and comes with a single 6 amp battery. Much more powerful and will last a long time.

However, the store was out of the $299 version and not expected to get any more. I talked to the counter staff, and the assistant manager walked with me to the aisle, scanned it as said, "The best I can do is $399.00. Will that work?"

Hell to the yeah! So my son, who will be doing my yard for me, was pleased with my negotiating prowess.

Anyway, used it once. Charged the battery full before using it and the instructions said that the first charge may take up to 24 hours to fully charge but only about 30 minutes after that each time. It took about twelve hours.

Build quality seems solid. Has an easy to use bagger, or an easy to use (ad hoc or permanent) side discharge chute. The controls for the power drive assist are from thumb paddles, so very easy to use. It will rev up as it meets resistance to add additional power and then throttle down when you don't need it.

Second what Hubba said.

We got the same one he talks about to mow the yard at work. I was blown away with how quiet it is. I liked that it could sense the resistance and rev up when hitting the thicker stuff.

I'm half tempted to buy one now

Most mfg that put a Honda engine on the unit will have a decent unit. Craftsman and previous Troy-Bilt front whee drive self
Propelled are fine.

Honda runs a little better as it is OHC not OHV. Which comes down to slightly tighter tolerance.

I even seen Briggs and Stratton’s OHV come in that lasted 15 yrs due to owners have here is the key taken care of their units. Change the oil and filter on a yearly basis. Once dirt gets in the unit it is not if it is when.

Blades keep them sharp you can get a cheap sharpening blade at the home improvement store. It the stone fits on a drill and then has a level.
- run stone over edges of both sides of the blade a few times not a lot again a few means less than five times
- check for level
Side that lower sharpen more to lighten the blade until level.

If you want a better more aggressive blade get an extreme or gator blade. Yellow and a little ok a lot more aggressive.

If your front whee drive slows down either belt stretched which guess what they do. Change it and keep the grass from getting around the pulley on the front.

Simple maintenance will keep a unit running along time even units with Briggs engines.

Thanks for the info on the Kobalt 80V. I kept looking at them at the Lowe's near me expecting a price drop on the 2018 model. Then the next time I was in the store the only model was the 2019.

I have the 2018 model 80V weed eater that I really like. I assume the batteries are still interchangeable?

As far as I know, yes, but the amps will be different, I assume.

BTW - for those looking at these type lawnmowers, here's what's missing:

Oil changes,
Cleaning the air filter,
Fouled spark plugs,
Carburetor maintenance,
Ethanol gas fouling the carb and gumming up the fuel line,
Spilling gas on yourself, the lawn, the drive or garage.
Pulley's, belts and cables.
Loud Noise.
Priming the fuel.
Flooding the carb.
Pulling a starter cord.

Which is why I have a reel mower.

Honda's industrial-grade GX engines are OHV, not OHC. The OHC system in the Honda GC and GS series actually lets them get away with looser tolerances (you aren't getting too much precision out of that tiny rubber cam belt too). For residential and light commercial use you don't need that much precision anyways as long as you aren't beating up the mower and keeping it full of good oil.

I bought a honda motor on troybuilt chassis in 2017. Only ever put tru-fuel in it. Just took it out to scalp the lawn this weekend and after sitting for 5 months it started on 4 pulls.

No choke or primer bulbs yada yada, just a reliable motor. The troybuilt parts have some things Im not thrilled about but the honda part is great.

Get the highest cc you can afford.
