Well friends I am in need of a new smart thermostat.

I realize that these thermostats do better with a dedicated C-wire. (I learned this the hard way in a previous home). Luckily, my new home has the C-wire so this will not be an issue.

I have used nest in the past and probably have one in my possession, I just need to dig it out.

Should I be unable to find the nest, what say you brethren?

If you have one or have had multiple ones what did you like and dislike? why would you choose one over the other?

I have an Ecobee and I would recommend. Interface on the device and phone app are both easy to navigate.

I’ll only add this comment, if you peruse the HVAC-Talk (AOP) forum where homeowners questions are answered by experienced HVAC techs, techs despise NEST thermostats, some so far as to jokingly say they’ve made enough $ to put their kids through college replacing them to fix HVAC issues experienced by homeowners. Here is one such thread I bookmarked, there are many others I’ve read on this subject on this site.. LINK. I suppose many use them without issues but is it worth risking it?

On the other hand they like, or rather should I say, they say they rarely deal with issues associated with either Ecobee and Honeywell thermostats.

I got the Emerson Sensi through the Entergy Louisiana conservation online store for Free. I’ve had no issues with it so far.

I just wish it was “cooler” looking.

We have a Honeywell Lyric since last October. The app is great, schedule set up was easy, and it isn't as sleek looking as a Nest, but it is tucked in a hallway so I'm not exactly making it a focal point. My sister has a couple of Nests and likes them. Best part is being able to turn it off when you leave on a trip and click it back on about 1-2 hours from home.

I have a honeywell -- had it for about 3 years now. absolutely no issues. app is super simple to navigate. no instructions required. system now fully automated. I very rarely make adjustments.

Honeywell makes the best "thermostat" of the bunch but it may not have the smart features you want.

I would never use a t-stat that didn't have CPH control and I dont think Nest nor Ecobee have that.

I have 3 nests at my home with no issues. App works fine and schedule program works fine. Will say I didn’t like the auto learn function

Sure they do. Most if not all digital thermostats have a timer in the code to make sure they don't cycle the compressors too frequently.

When I was on my own and a customer would ask what they should get, I'd tell them to get what I have. They'd ask why that one... I'd tell them because I can go to mine and talk them through the issues they might encounter. For the past 10+ years that has been a Honeywell 8000 which the auxiliary heat outputs gave up the ghost in the recent cold snap. I've ordered an Ecobee 5 that came this week and have been reading the manual. Will install this weekend and will provide honest evaluation.

I've only tried nest. I have moved about 4 times and just bring it with me. Never a problem.

We have ecobee and it works great. You can link it to Google home if that's your thing.

nest here for 2 houses, no issues ... something also to think about .. Nest also makes some of the best rated doorbell, outdoor and indoor cameras .( nest outdoor cameras are currently one the only wireless ones that record 24/7, not just motion activated) so, if you are interested in that type of stuff, nest app will work both thermostat and cameras. not sure if ecobee or honeywell have cameras.. just my .02

ecobee links with alexa and apple homekit, so you can tie all that stuff together if you want.

Had an ecobee at our old house, Honeywells currently. I prefer the Honeywell units honestly. I find them easier to set up, and the ones we have also have remote sensors. They are also more intuitive in my opinion.

I have 4 Nests - I put them in myself. I had to replace one of my four units about 18 mos ago, and the HVAC company didn't try to sell me a new thermostat, just connected the Nest I had on the wall already. The only experience I have is my own, and I always thought they are just one of those products that always seems to work.
