Killing Armadillos and Racoons?
Posted on 7/29/26 at 8:38 am

In the past I would use my bolt action 22, but there are too many houses around me now to do this. There has been 10 house built since I moved here five years ago. The racoons (three) are all in the garden tearing it up.
What other options do I have that will not wake up the neighbors which one is a cop or endanger them?

Have been unsuccessful in my efforts so far. Pest control guy I called to ask for help with told me if I am struggling in trapping him, it's probably because he was previously trapped and released.
Also have to be cognizant of what I do, because I want to keep the possum family around.

Dog proof coon cuffs with dry cat food is the simplest. You can op for better baits but ants then come into play. Tie off the traps or they’ll leave with them. Game camera and a pellet gun at night is also an option.

Armadillos do dig holes, but they also eat a shitload of bad bugs like ticks, termites, ants, etc.
I try to just keep them on the periphery of my property by leaving the dogs out

The armadillos are bigger than my dog (8 pounds).

If you still have a clear shot but just worried about the noise, 22lr bolt action with the right suppressor and subs can be really quiet.

This except I don't remove them until they are dead.
Two ways: have a heart trap baited with dry cat food or dog proof also baited with cat food.
I've killed so many at my house and farm with those methods.
ETA:
When I say I don't move them until they are dead, I shoot them in the head with a silenced .22 pistol. I don't let them suffer.

Subsonic .22 shorts will kill a raccoon or an armadillow. Just don’t shoot twice in a row.

CCI subsonics are quieter than my Beeman pellet rifle.

Thanks - my local Walmart has some.

You can put shorts in the 22 and it isn't any louder than a pellet gun. Just make sure you're shooting towards the ground.
A dog proof coon trap (aka coon cuff) works really well. They're about $15 online or at the hardware store. Just dispatch the coon humanely with a quick blow to the head with a bat.
My dog is hell on armadillos but doesn't know WTF to do with a racoon

I've killed plenty of armadillos and coons with a subsonic .22 in the neighborhood. No one notices it. and if you put a suppressor on it and shoot those subsonics it barely makes a sound.

I am hoping I injured two of the three racoons (mon & two babies) this morning when I trying to get them out of the garden. They were in the 4' x 8' raised bed of peas when I started hitting them with a short prong metal rake. There was blood on the rake. Hopefully the rat poison chunks I had in there they ate will kill them. I have a camera in there and when I looked at 4:30 AM they have been in there about two hours already.

Sounds like a raccoon massacre took place this morning!

Coons can absolutely destroy a Havahart style trap. If you catch one you best drive it off about 15 miles or it will be back.
They love our hummingbird feeders so a small bowl of sugar water attracts them like crack.

Subsonic ammo and a suppressor. It’ll never be heard inside.

If you have trouble trapping them, use a trail of small marshmallows to lure them into the trap. They are smart and will try to get to them without setting off the trap.

I don’t have problems with coons, lots of armadillos though.I wouldn’t bother the armadillos except they get in my wife’s flowerbeds and wreak havoc.
Then the wife is pissed off( If Mama ain’t happy nobody is happy)
If the armadillos would just stay in the lawn eating grubs I wouldn’t have moles. If I didn’t have moles my dogs wouldn’t dig holes all over the yard.
