Any tips on cleaning the rust as best I can, or is it fricked?

Inside or out?
Inside, take it to a sand or soda blast outfit. Wire brush outside and high temp paint. Wife is threatening to paint mine but she will not get that far once it becomes work.

The cajun fryers are the tits, but they are a BITCH to clean. I still haven't found a good way to get all of the batter bits from the bottom.

Easy, fill it up with water and bring to a rolling boil.
Drain into a metal or plastic bucket.
May have to do it twice but it will be clean as whistle.

I am going to have to remember that. The burner tube makes it impossible to scoop out so that's probably the best way.

Are you in BR because the guy that "borrowed" mine six years ago never returned it and last time I saw it it was rusting away in his back yard shed.

My dad was about to throw away a 5 gallon cast iron jambalaya pot a few years back, because it was so rusted. After doing some research, I soaked the entire thing in vinegar and it removed all the rust. I had to re-season it several times, but it is a damn good pot now!

Sorry can’t say that I’m in BR. This one was in the back of a shed at my grandfathers farm.

Empty the oil in a bucket. Take the fryer to a self serve carwash. Dump in the drain and wash it out.

I’m sure the owner of the self serve loves having gallons of fish grease poured down his drains. That’s not bad for the pipes at all.

Im not saying dump the oil down the drain. Im saying dump the debris in the drain and clean the fryer. You have any idea about the amount of oil and general crap that comes off of you car when you clean it. They pump out the traps on a regular basis.

When you drain it periodically use the stuff to clean. Fill it up almost to the top and let it boil. Doesn’t matter if it boils over a little.

Go to dollar store and pick up a cleaner called Totally Awesome. Mix with water boil. Then drain and repeat with clean water.
