Local guys want 12,000 to replace a mid tier 3 ton unit in my house. He says prices have tripled. A little over a year ago they replaced the 5 ton on the other side of the house for $10,000 and it was top of the line at the time.
I would buy his logic except that my BIL just had one replaced 5 ton for $4,000.
I would use my BILs guy but he’s 2hrs away and only services a 50 square mile area.
So my question is…… is my guy trying to price gouge?
They have great customer service and we’ve been pleased with them… but geez this seems high.

True, in what world would you only get one quote and take the guy's word for it? Purchasing 101, always get at least 2-3 quotes.

Yes. Always get multiple quotes on HVAC work. 3-4, 5-6 is better. There's a huge profit margin and you want to find the company that wants the work.

3 ton should be $6-8k.

Set up a morning and have 4-6 companies come over. Should take 15 minutes for them to quote a simple replacement. Schedule them 30 minutes apart. See what you get back.

Thank you sir for an intelligent reply unlike some people on this thread. I will certainly be getting multiple quotes but when the “guy” you normally use suddenly goes out of character there is a moment of shock before you continue.

Thats way off. I just got a quote to change a 5 ton on a roof that requires a crane rental for 12k and a 7.5ton for 16k

I bet you he does give you great service. He obviously can’t wait to get to your house.

Eh, I wouldn't say that.

HVACs are like the vehicle market 5 years ago. Sometimes you go into one dealer and find a great deal, the next time they don't have anything.

I don't think it makes the dealer or the HVAC guy any different.

Like I said, its a large profit margin. Your "guy" may just be really busy and not have time so he marked it up a lot. Hard to say.

HVAC install and HVAC repair work should not be treated the same as far as "my guy".

Get 5 quotes, throw out the highest and the lowest. Pick from the remaining 3. Or offer the $4000 guy $6000 to go outside of his 50 mile radius.

River City just quoted me $10k-$15k for a new one. I was like “no thank you.”

Also quoted $1,700 for 3-4 pounds of 22 freon

Surprised they still had some .... it was supposedly "outlawed" starting 2021. Thus part of the reason I'm having to replace. My old unit has a leaky coil and they won't refill the R22 anymore.

You’d really need to define “mid-tier”. Did he quote a single stage seer 16 unit, or possibly even a two-stage seer 17/18 unit? Those are often considered mid-tier units and can be $2-4 K more expensive than “low tier” builders grade single stage 14 seer units.

That said, I follow a number of HVAC sites, including getting a HVAC trade magazine delivered to the house, and though the price of HVAC equipment has increased, and that’s frequently discussed in articles in the trade magazine, nowhere have I seen mentioned where prices have tripled.

A quick online search of the cheapest Goodman 14 Seer 5 ton Split System (Equipment Only on-line purchase shipped to Your Door, no installation) is near $4K - I’d be curious as to what your BIL had installed.

That's easy, his BIL likely lied. No way he got that unit installed for what he's saying.

BIL had a Bryant installed... no clue what seer

the 12k quote is a 17 seer two stage. Quoted 16k for an 18 seer variable speed. 7,600 for a 14 seer single stage.

and my BIL did not lie. He told me exactly what he paid bc he knew I was about to replace one as well. He lives in a bigger city so possibly he was able to get someone independent who could do the work a lot cheaper but he did pay $4k.
