Depends on what all is entailed by "system," but that seems like a good price generally speaking.

Depends on what options.

Single speed outdoor?
Variable speed indoor?
Whole house air filter at handler?

These are the option sI would recommend.

The variable speed blower is the tits with a 7 minute dehumidification cycle at call for cooling which runs the air at 80% and the coil at 100% and then ramps the air up to 100% if setpoint is not reached after 7 minutes.

We get 48% humidity indoors in the heat of summer in BR, LA.

Seems very cheap for Austin. Is this just for the outdoor unit and coil, and no furnace?

Until the fan motor breaks and the part costs over $600.00. Ask me how I know.

$2k a ton is the average price for a complete replacement system including new ductwork

reusing all the old ductwork and just the new units maybe $8k

That's for the whole system including furnace using existing ducts.

That’s cheap - I was quoted $8900 for a basic 4 ton Trane single stage SEER 14 w/ gas furnace 3 years ago this summer (using existing ducts). This unit they quoting have an electric furnace (cheaper than gas)? If so have you considered a Trane Heat Pump?

Natural gas furnace is the way to go. That’s really good pricing for a Trane, well any name brand HVAC for that matter.
