Got 3 at my place all fighting for the same feeder and flowers. So much rage in such little bodies.

I took my feeder down on Saturday to clean and refill it, and I saw my first hummingbird on Sunday. It flew up to the spot where my feeder usually hung and paused there. I hadn't put the feeder back up. So I immediately mixed up some sugar water and rehung the feeder. Today I noticed that the nectar was down by about a third.

Had 3 little peacful juvies or females. A mature male showed up, then I had one. Yesterday another male showed up, they are going to die from never eating, just guarding two feeders. There is enough juice for 100 birds.

Hummingbirds are a-hole.

Full force here in Broussard. Probably 80 feedings a day for both feeders. Most are repeat visitors. One day whole refilling the dispenser, the little badtards almost attacked me.

I am assuming they are hungry after a long flight.

I started seeing them at the feeders about 2 weeks ago. I have 3 or 4 pairs hanging out.

Hummingbird don't really "pair." But look out for the courtship display which is a male flying in a large "U" shape like a pendulum - called a pendulum display. They will also fly side to side in front of a perched female.

After courtship and mating, the male splits and goes on the lookout for another partner.

As to the other species, it depends on where you are. If in Louisiana, the further south you are the more likely you are to see other species. Two relatively common species during migration are Anna's and Rufous hummingbirds. The females of both species have rufous (reddish brown) flanks that can look orange. The Male Rufous hummingbird is mostly rufous colored including his back, with some green also.

So far what I believe to be my usual 3 visitors. With the smallest one being the bully.

Now up to 5 - 6 with a constant battle this morning. Then I look over a few minutes later and 4 on one feeder

None yet in the N.O. area, but I did just put out my feeder a week ago, so I'll give it time. I've also got a backyard garden with 5 rows 50 ft. long with tons of flowering plants to feed on, but so far, none.

I saw one hummer today in NW Arkansas. This was most likely a scout.

I've had two or three around my house the last week or so. I have three feeders up, along with two different areas of Iris's, and a Columbine plant. They have been hitting all three of them daily. I hope I have more show up, I love watching them when they start swarming around.

hummingbirds in Louisiana

Had only 1 (Ruby-Throated) for the last 2 or 3 weeks but now another has joined. (Denham Springs). The hummer you're seeing with "orange" is a Rufous.

I got 3 doing the same thing. They could have a feeder each, but they fight over the 1 and don’t touch the other 2.

Thanks, that looks like it. I wish it would have hung around long enough for a picture. They aren't guarding/hanging out at the feeder like they did in the fall.

Had one almost take my head off in Ponchatoula today. My grandmother, who was the previous owner of my house, always had feeders out so I think it’s time I invest in the process. I love watching them.

What's the best sugar to water ratio for best results?

How often do you change it out? Once a week?
