How long before I need to give up on my 12 year old satsuma and grapefruit trees?

Christmas cold snap hit them hard. Still have green when I scratch the main trunks but every branch looks dead and no leaves yet...

try a little longer...I'm in BR and mine are just starting to show signs of budding out from what looks like dead bark...can't hurt to wait

I just cut my Satsuma near lafaytte, back ti the green shoots on the bigger limbs foo main trunk. Rest of tree is brittle or semi brittle with one live limb dying since it leafed. So I’m thinking it’s too weak to feed while tree and reduced it so it can consolidate its strength ti the core.

Damn. where are you located? I'm in BR and all of my trees are coming back nicely. I was afraid they would not because I didn't cover them at all

In BR, my satsuma is doing great.

However, had a 10’ lime tree and that guy looks dead as a door nail.

My CENLA Satsuma is only showing green growth on the main trunk. All limbs appear dead. Can this turn into a producing tree or should I start over?

this sounds like what i had, the main root is still alive but the fruit tree grafted to it has died.

mine went 2 more years making leaves and new growth but it wasnt a fruit tree, it was just the base graft root still growing.

time to replace it

I have shoots above the graft and am snipping everything from below.

well it might still have a chance then, just watch what the leaves look like.

you can tell once they get a little bigger if its a satsuma leaf, or leaf of the base root bush that it was grafted to, that was just growing up through the dead top satsuma part of the tree

i never knew you were dealing with 2 trees with satsuma, one is the base root, and then the grafted on satsuma on top. i kept seeing green leaves, but no flowers, or fruit, for 2 years that i was wasting time on trying to save it.

There are satsuma varieties that are good down to 15 degrees. Are yall planting older less cold hardy varieties?

If so, is there a taste reason???

in my case it was a small young tree roughly 3-4 years old. IIRC it was a osawi satsuma

Don't give up yet. I'm still getting new growth every day. Some on branches I thought were dead.

Same as my Satsuma in Lafayette. Last week I cut it back to the leafing and it seems to have allowed the tree to focus on the core spots now.

Cenla here also. I keep my citrus no higher than 6 feet, and cover them with leaves in December with a heavy cover around base. On really cold spells like we had, I cover with painters sheet and top with tarp anchored down. A lot of work but I lose only a few tips of branches and have lots of fruit flowers right now.

Our satsuma tree is 23 years old, and we have good years and bad years with it. Lafayette.
