I have a mature 1 acre yard and have cast iron plants that border the entire yard and also the surrounding trees. Yellow Jackets are increasingly building nest on the underside of the cast iron leaves. Last year when watering I killed and pulled 40 nests as I found them. The year before it was less than 10. For little guys they sting pretty good and I want to keep them out. The only way to find them is to piss them off and I'd like to take a more proactive approach if anyone knows a solution. Thanks in advance

Yellow jackets nest in the ground.

For the wasps you’re dealing with, buy a couple of cans of wasp spray.

Boy, do I know that. Was mowing my yard once and those sonofabitches lit me the hell up. I ran over their little hole in the ground where they were nesting and before I knew it, I was stung a few times with more flying all around me.

My arse hopped off the mower with it still running and I was shagging my arse outta there. I can't remember how I was able to return to the mower and move it without getting stung again, but somehow I managed to do it.

I also remember it being a painful fricking sting and not wanting to experience that again.

first, you make a roux

IIRC, the little bastards hate the smell of pinesol. Not sure if it's safe for plants, but I'm planning on hitting all my usual spots with pinesol spray this year

1 acre will be tough but people underestimate how effective ultrasonic devices are at keeping wasp/bees away.

I buy a case of yellow jacket spray every yr. We have a farm with numerous outbuildings so every hole or nook and canny is a possible nest. I hate getting stung. The worse thing is hitting a ground nest during hay season.

Bees don’t attack at night so you can shine a light on them and spray them good. Or pour an insecticide mix in their hole.

“Bees don’t attack at night so you can shine a light on them”

That only works if you use a red light.I was looking for something by my tractor shed one night with a regular white light headlight, yellow jackets lew right at the light and stung me in the corner of my eye.

Best thing I've found is to pour a gallon of ammonia in the hole after dark and cover with a bucket if you can

Supposedly them lil demons hate the smell of peppermint.

They say plant a few spearmint plants around your place, in a pot though, that stuff spreads like wildfire.

I can't say one way or the other.

I had a nest of them in my attic a couple of years ago. I put on a bee suit and sprayed the crap out of them.

Sounds like there is a huge colony(s) of them nearby.

I would get a reputable pest control outfit to see where them lil devils are coming from.

I usually find little holes in the ground and stomp all around it. The resulting rapid air pressure differences will relax them until they forget to breathe and will just die peacefully. It’s the humane way.

I've watched the youtube videos of these things. Boy are they absolutely a terror. Go watch a few experts take care of them. When they knot up on the camera guys with the suits on you essentially cannot hear b/c the mics are picking up too many kamikaze hits.

And, you really don't notice them until late summer at the earliest.

Find their nest hole. Wait till it gets dark. Pour a cup full of gasoline in hole.

My daughter and I got attacked walking near a nest. We took off running, but those bastards were up our shirts and shorts and kept stinging all the way back to the house.

We did the nighttime raid explained above. It has been years and there has not been another nest in my yard.
