I need to have both hot water heaters replaced in the house. This isn't a job I can do myself considering they're located in difficult spots in the attic.

One is leaking and needs to be replaced from upper and lower elements. The other seems to be heading in the same direction.

Plumbing company comes out and quotes me for two replacements and confirmed they need to be replaced. Two 50 Gal Units, Rheem, Electric, 4500W...$3,788.

I made the argument that I can get a how water heater for $900 at Home Depot but they said the quality isn't the same as commercial grade, etc. To me, it's all the same crap, but I figure even if I buy my own and pay for install, I'm probably looking at ($2800 with install, $900/unit + tax, difference labor for 3-4 hours.

Am I being taken for a ride at $3788 or is the better quality units worth it? I'm sure there are additional components needed.

Tankless water heater I assume is not an option for me. No gas.

Why is the other one heading in the same direction? Is it starting to leak?

The leaking one, is it leaking from the bottom or where the elements screw into the heater.

(Note: You're about to get harassed for calling it a "hot" water heater.)

The leaking one has water in the pan and the tank is leaking. Unscrew upper element and filled with water. I could tell its shot. The leak isnt coming from the lines.

The second has moisture coming down from the top. Pan is dry but there is potential for it to turn into a problem as well. I'm just trying to make the fix efficiently before it becomes an issue.

I'm curious to know if there really is a difference in the commercial grade they claim.

My plumber has had me pick them up at Home Depot.

But I'm not sure if the supply house brands are better.

I would love to know also cause that is the first I ever hear of such a thing. “Commercial” in a residential?!?!

I have a friend who is a plumber and will ask next time I see him

Second Plumber came out and told me there was a difference vs what is provided in the supply shops.

This other company beat those folks by a few hundred bucks so I went with them. $3500 installed.

I pray and believe with my babies every night. "My God shall supply all my needs according to his riches and glory in Christ Jesus."

Last two weeks. Bank error in my favor: $2,000. Unexpected refund from my kids old daycare: $1500.

Coincidence? No. Lord looks out for his children. Trust and believe.

Sucks you can't do the work yourself.

They told you the truth, Lowe's and Home Depot sell garbage water heaters in store. I picked up a commercial-grade Bradford-White natural gas 50-gallon unit for about $600 and installed it myself plus another $150 for a high-volume sediment filter plumbed into the inlet side. Went to a local plumbing supply store which will almost always carry better products and usually not as expensive as you might think.

I just installed a new Rheem 40 gal Wednesday. It was $625, including tax.

I'd do everything in my power to replace them myself before I pay that price. But, if that isn't an option, I'd at least get a couple of other quotes.

Last year I had two water heaters replaced at the same time. They charged me $2250 for both. I could have done it myself 15 years ago but I'm not dragging those thinks up there anymore. Both 50 gallon.
