Home security system, is it worth it and who to use.

Title covers it. Thinking of getting a home security system but have seen very bad reviews for ADT.

Not sure where you're located but... Custom Security out of BR.

Wyze is effective, licensed and cheap. There is zero reason to pay those companies that prey on women wild prices for monitoring. ADT, Vivint, etc.

Is this better than Eufy? Asking for my mom as she’s currently getting ripped off by ADT and doesn’t want to leave them.

Just get something from best buy

what's the point?
if someone is going to steal something, your ADT alarm isn't going to stop them, or help catch them.
Get some security cameras of Amazon and install it yourself. You can buy some door chimes off amazon as well

I considered this heavily when we bought a house.
I just wanted a system that will alert me when a door or window is opened when its not suppose to. I did not want to be locked into a 1-3 year contract for "monitoring." Most companies charge $25-$50 per month to essentially call 911 on your behalf. I personally do not think that is worth the $500/year cost.
SimpliSafe offers a product that allows the user to manage the hardware themselves without contracts or sign up to their monitoring plan for like $25/month. I can personally vouch for their hardware and really like the ease of their app and setting up. I have a chime on each window and door, it allows me to customize everything I want. You can get a complete hardware setup for a house for $300-$500 and if thats all you want to spend, that is it. No monthly fees unless you want to pay for monthly fees for monitoring.

Thanks, will look into that.

The bad reviews for services like ADT are a result of folks trying to get out of their contract after ADT installs their system. My mother has ADT and they do exactly whst they say they will do. They provide pretty much full security, fire, and medical emergency monitoring. That comes for a monthly fee. They also call me if an alarm goes off in her house.
On the other hand, I opted for Euphy cameras, I don’t have monitoring on those, but they tell me what is going on through my phone. Footage is stored locally, so there is no monthly fee,

I used to have Simplisafe and switched to ring about a year ago. I was happy with Simplisafe, but I already had the ring doorbells, and I needed to update my floodlights. So, I went with the Ring floodlights, then switched over to their home security system.
Works just as good as Simplisafe, but I now have my cameras linked to the system. So if an alarm is tripped and I am not home, I can quickly pull up the app to see what happened AND check the cameras for activity.

I use SimpliSafe and have been happy. You install it yourself, but it's easy.
Biggest issue is the sensors on windows and doors aren't hard wired so randomly the system will say a certain sensor is low on battery. Takes 10 seconds and a cheap watch battery to fix.

I have Ring and SimpliSafe in tandem
I've thought about doing what you did, but I've been too lazy. I also live in a crazy safe area so I am just not a frequent user of the simplisafe system unless we're out of town.
I use the ring camera to see if packages are at delivered and yell at jehovahs witness and roofing door-to-door people, but that's it.

It varies by jurisdiction I'm sure, but all of my local municipalities bump the priority on home alarms to the lowest priority response. There are so many false alarms and rarely any legitimate alarms.
If you do an alarm, make sure you splurge on the sirens. A thief won't stick around with a siren going off that's loud enough to wake up the neighborhood. Monitoring is useless in most use cases. By the time the police respond, any suspect is already gone.

Where is the best place to get a complete setup? Would this be easy to use for an 80 yr old? She can find her way around her phone fine enough.

I have SimpliSafe. It's easy to set up, and the cost is very minimal to get going.

We did ring at our old house, since we already had a few ring cameras. They have a retrofit kit so you can tie their panel into the existing sensors for doors and windows, then doors/windows that did not have a sensor I added the wireless sensors. I had no issues at all with the system, and have multiple properties that I can access all through the same app for monitoring cams and such.

I vouch for SimpliSafe myself
