Has anybody here had luck with off brand Ego replacement batteries?

The battery for my Ego blower is no longer taking a charge. I tried to reset it and did the drop test without any luck. A 2.5 mah EGO battery is around $140. Amazon has 5 mah replacements for around $60. Worth the risk?

I know that it probably won't have the advertised capacity but I use my blower for about 5 minutes at a time.

I have 2 x 5ah knock offs, but not that specific one. They are actually performing and lasting better than the EGO batteries.

ETA: ELECBRAiN This is the one I have.

Out of curiosity, how old is the EGO battery that failed?

Thanks for the rec. I think I'll go this route. They have better reviews than the one I posted.

I think I bought it summer of 2021. It's been having issues for around a year now. It wouldn't work for more than 4 or 5 seconds in turbo without shutting down. You'd have to wait 5-10 seconds before it'd start up again, even on a fresh charge.

my EGO battery does that on the trimmer pole but not on the chainsaw. It’s aggravating

I bought one off brand one off Amazon. It worked ok for a few months and then turned to poop. It was the same 5ah as the Ego brand ones but it would last maybe 20% as long as the older Ego ones.
And the Ego ones have a 3 year warranty i believe, so if they start acting up you file the warranty and get a new one. One of my 2 Ego batteries started acting up right at the 3 year mark and i was able to get a brand new one. The other one is probably 5 years old and is still working well.

You can go buy the Ego blower that comes with two 4ah batteries for $379, keep the two batteries and sell the brand new blower on ebay for $200.

Would never use cheap aftermarket batteries, I buy new Samsung cells and rebuild my own packs if possible. The charge management is too important, good way to start a fire is to trust poorly implemented or non-existent circuitry or programming, especially with large batteries. Many of those companies use recycled cells, the advertised capacity is nowhere close to reality and you are getting a worn out product straight from the box.

damn, that sounds like a good plan. The blower that comes with that deal is better than mine, though

Forgot to add, this is my only Ego product. I'm not married to the Ego system so I don't mind getting another brand if I go the new blower route.

What brand of power tools do you use? If you have DeWalt/Milwaukee/etc I would stay in that universe.

Dewalt. I'm about to go pick up the Dewalt blower that comes with a 5mah battery. $189, hopefully I can get 50 on eBay for my old Ego blower.

I have a Stihl already otherwise I would 100% be all for an electric chainsaw.

That's perfect then. Keep it in the family is the best option. I have the DeWalt 20v blower and with the 5mah battery it's plenty of power and endurance for regular clean up. I have a backpack blower/large property, but I love the DeWalt for patios and smaller areas on non-yard days.

I have a few Stihl chainsaws I won't get rid of, but I really want to try the DeWalt saw for all of the quick branch cutting etc.

Keep an eye out for deals on batteries/chargers, Home Depot is running a deal where buying the 9 Ah FlexVolt battery and 8-amp fast charger gets you a select free tool.

I have 2 knock offs from eBay for my Craftsman stuff. I've only had them for about four months, but they seem perfectly fine.

Is there a warrantry on their batteries? If so maybe get one free???

I had a Greenworks 60v start to show weakness after about 5 years. I contacted Greenworks and was 2 months inside of warranty - replaced free.
I have 3 batteries and that is the only one that ever weakened.

It was out of warranty. I guess it'd be smart to make a warranty claim before it runs out with these things.

Home Depot's customer service was pretty good this morning. I price matched the Dewalt blower/5mah battery kit. $189, $50 off the HD price. I got the ready for pick up notification yesterday evening and went to pick it up this morning. When I got there they said it was out of stock and they didn't have it ready. I walked with a big ole gal to home and garden to see if there was one on the shelf. I rizzed her up on the walk over. When we couldn't find the one I ordered it was her idea to give me the $299 kit that has a more powerful blower and 8 mah battery. Walked out for $208 with tax. Plus they apologized for the inconvenience.
