My kitchen sink will hold water until I run the disposal.

I keep hearing about it from someone, but its seems like thats kinda how it works. Is it messed up or are ya'lls like that too?

You got some blockage going, clean the p-trap and the drain pipe from the disposal.

Good question….because I have the same issue. I figure it is because the dump hose is routed wrong or something like that.

Ours was doing that and it wasnt the p trap

The wall drain pipe was full of ........ coffee grounds

They wernt being flushed enuf and when dried are like concrete

When you rin the disposal it acts like a pump and will assist the water down

Pour some boiling hot water down, add 1:1 baking soda then vinegar. Let it sit for awhile til the bubbles stop and pour more hot water down.

Also, I highly recommend never using your disposal unless you're putting in a liquid. Most stuff doesn't belong in it.

The coffee grounds are probably the result of someone using the metal screen filter that comes with most coffee makers these days. I threw mine in the garbage. The problem with those filters is there is no way to get all the grounds out of the screen without rinsing the filter. Thus a slow build up of coffee grounds in your drain pipes.

If you have hydrangeas, gardenias, or blueberries, save your coffee grounds and pour them at the base of these plants. They are acid loving plants. Also, the grounds will dissolve into soil anyway.

Its a great way to dispose of the grounds and feed the plants.

I've had more than a couple plumbers tell me that the best course of action when it comes to garbage disposals is to remove them and put scraps in the garabage instead of down the sink. We've had enough trouble with them over the years that I'm inclined to do just that soon. Coffee grounds, veggie peels are the usual culprits; they're ok as long as you don't overload the disposal too quickly but it's sometimes a fine line. I'm the usual coffee culprit and am re-training myself to put the grounds in the garbabe instead of disposal.

To help the disposal clear a partial blockage I do the following full-sink power flush ever few months. 1. Put stoppers in drains. 2. Fill basins to the top with water. 3. Remove stoppers and turn disposal on until all the water is gone.

If you have 2 basins/drains, the disposal may just pump water up into the other basin. If that happens, forcefully keep a stopper in the basin without the disposal until the basin w/ disposal is empty. Then remove the stopper.

I've also tried to cut down on how much stuff I run through the disposal.... can't say my wife has the same attitude.

this helped with my slow draining. But I still replaced the disposal afterwards because the metal components were rusting a good bit.

when my disposal goes out I'm going to replace it with one of these extra-deep drains with basket. Never used one but seems like it would work well for keeping the strainer from immediately clogging with small food items. just empty basket into compost or trash when ready.

I had a clog in kitchen sink, then i used a plunger to solve it, but then the disposal started leaking(a seal or gasket inside disposal). So I replaced the disposal with a higher HP so it had less trouble liquifying food waste.

I quit using mine for food. Run super hot water for a while and put Dawn liquid detergent down it. You can also buy an enzyme cleaner to put down it to help clean out organic buildup.

I've been in my current house since 92 and it was built in the late 20's. Only once in all the time I've been here have I had a clogged sink and I've never had a garbage disposal.

All I do is use one of those fine mesh screens that fits in the drain hole and that catches any small particles of food that are missed when wiping the plates by the kitchen garbage can.

I'll never have one in any house I own.

We have had the same Whirlpool disposal for 25 years.

We don't put large scraps in it, mostly small stuff rinsed off plates along with some occasional peels or similar. Rrn ice through it periodically.

No clogs or breakdowns.
