Pulling all of the baby stuff from the attic and it’s a pain in the butt. Thinking about building a shelving rack in the garage so I can store these storage containers for holiday stuff and other items.

What everyone did for storage in their garage? Build shelving or of any recs on buying metal shelving to assemble?

Will probably compare the cost of each tonight and do a little more research

Heavy duty metal shelving from Lowes. Even with particle shelves (that rested on the metal framing), they didn't sag being in the humid garage for over a decade. Well, except the bottom shelf that had hundreds of pounds of ammo on it.

I buy the biggest shelf brackets they have at lowes (20" I believe), rip plywood sheets in half and lay over top. I have this basically all the way around my garage about 30" from the ceiling. Frees up the lower area for storing other stuff that can't go on a shelf.

I bought Husky shelves at Home Depot and used tons of clear totes so I can see what's in each one. I got the 90"x90"x24" ones.

I have those husky shelves too. Very happy with them. I also have 2 ceiling mounted racks that hold large stuff like my ice chests and boiling pot

I have the Husky racks too. These gladiator wall mounts are also nice to have. There are a bunch of different style hooks, baskets, shelves, bike racks, etc.

This is the one I was looking at building, but if I priced it out correctly it would be 200 bucks for materials. And I could buy a metal rack for the same.

Do you remember the size and cost of the one you built? I could have don the math wrong

Diy'd this setup for a "floating" shelf on 3 walls.

Used threaded rod in lieu of the vertical wood supports, unistrut at the ceiling.

Probably my #1 favorite diy project due to is use. I was able to triple my garage storage with under 300$. Went from parking no cars in the garage to 2 cars comfortably in an afternoon.

2x4 studs are cheapest.

These husky shelves are great for $200 LINK don’t buy the flimsy $159 silver color metal/wood. That one is junk.

I have a mix of free plastic shelves, one nice metal one, one flimsy metal one, and a couple that I welded with “spare” material that I probably needed to re-buy anyway so didn’t save any money there.

Before you shop Lowe's and Home Depot check to see if any warehouse supply store in your area stocks used shelving. That may just be the metal frames. Also look for retailers going out of business and selling furniture and fixtures. Bargains in used modular wire shelving are pretty common.

I am putting in a lift as soon as the attic cools down. I have great storage above my garage, fully plywood covered wall to wall, with a lift I can clear up a lot of storage issues.

I use the hanging 4x4 wire rack shelving.
A bit of a nuisance to retrieve/ place items , since I typically need a small step ladder to get to them. That's because I have bikes, etc underneath them.
Good for seldom used items.

I bought kitchen cabinets from a home store that was closing and installed them in my garage.

made a plywood worktop like a countertop then supplemented with wire shelves and other items as needed.

Has worked great for 26 years.

ETA - getting the kitchen cabinets also meant I got drawers in the base cabinets which are very handy.

Bought several pre fab cabinets from Lowe’s and hung them myself. Bought a butcher block and made a work bench. Looks great and very functional

I get these. If I’m storing heavy stuff, the precut plywood at Lowe’s fits the shelves. Just buy a few better/thicker pieces of plywood as needed.

These shelves are easy to build, pretty cheap, and sturdy.

Garage shelf plans

If you want to build tote storage this is also easy to build and cheap. There’s a calculator that shows you how to build and what lumber to buy to fit your needs.

Depends on size i suppose. I have 16 feet of those, at 19” deep to maximize the area between the wall and garage door.

I could probably get some cheaper 12” deep shelves, bit that’s not enough storage for me. At the same time I can’t use two sets of the $400 Huskies linked earlier.

Gladiator wall system, but my garage is a tiny torture chamber.
